This works great and saves the cost of a urinalysis
This seems to be a professional grade product. I have a cat who has kidney problems and I can track how she's doing by checking her urine specific gravity, but it costs me $75 each time I take her to the vet for a urinalysis. Based on that cost, and that I've used this product twice with really helpful results, it is a bargain and I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. It comes in an attractive storage case with a special cleaning cloth for the refractive surface.

Worked as expected but case damaged
The refractometer itself worked just as it should and arrived quickly. My only complaint is the case that it comes with the latch is broken so the case does not stay locked closed. Not a major problem but definitely an inconvenience when taking the refractometer anywhere.

This is a review for the URINE TESTING REFRACTOMETER for use in humans, cats and dogs to find out how concentrated your urine is. Or your pet's urine or your Dads.... So you need this one and not one of the many alternatives that look identical but have a different scale. It took me a while to get the right one. Hopefully as you are reading this review you are on the right page already. Despite the Amazon webpage designers getting 0/10, for all the confusion, the product itself gets 10/10. It is perfect, easy to use and seems to produce reasonable results that are reproducible. That means that if you test the same sample over and over again you get the same reading. This is important because it means you can reliably monitor changes in the urine concentration over time, say a week, or even a day. Common sense says that we woould expect it to change depending on how hydrated the patient is. But in some clinical conditions it remains at a certain level, and in others the kidneys cannot make concentrated urine at all and it stays at 1.005. A reading this low needs checking and if it stays this weak then call your doctor (if the patient is two-legged) or a vet (if they have four) because it needs checking. HOWEVER, in the meantime, please NEVER be tempted to withhold water to see if it can improve. Even for a few hours. If the kidneys cannot concentrate the urine they still won't be able to do so and your patient will very quickly beome seriously ill - within a few hours. Speaking as a veterinary surgeon my emphasis is on cats and dogs because they don't have a voice; human patients do but the warning still applies. This is because the thirst is due to the body losing too much water, as lots of urine, and the patient has to drink to replace it, not the other way round. Think of it like having a bucket with a hole in it and having to turn the tap on more to keep the bucket full. End of biology lesson! Oh, not quite.... read and learn...The urinary dipsticks which are commonly available and test 8-10 items at a time are very good for most items, but urine concentration (S.G). readings are the exception. They were designed for humans and more specifically for humans who are perfectly normal. But why are we doing a urine dipstick test? Because we think there is something abnormal. Duh! The result for the refractometer is the relaible reading,, not the dipstick. Lesson over. Thanks for reading.
