If you put it directly on the cold sore it will burn butif you apply it to the surrounding area the benefits of the oil will work.

I love a sandlewood fragrance what would you suggest

My personal favorite is WHISPER . It contains sandalwood and jasmine which is a marriage made in heaven, it sometimes replaces my Chanel , and at a much better price. Try and enjoy, I am a IPC for d o terra will be happy to answer any questions or concerns, just my opinion, the most expensive is not always the best.
