A nice improvement over the original CotourRoam
I had purchased the original ContourRoam camera about a week before they announced this one. Luckily I had saved my packaging so I returned it and bought the ContourRoam2. There are some small but very worthwhile changes to this camera that make it a better choice. First, of course, is the 60 fps video option. I haven't had a chance to test that yet but it's a nice addition and the main reason I went with the 2. Next, there is a locking button on the recording slider. This is useful to avoid either accidental starts or stops, as it locks in both positions. The printed numbers on the lens barrel are clearer, brighter, and far easier to see. The card formatting is now done by pushing and holding a small button. In the previous model you had to use the supplied tool or a paper clip and stick it into a hole to format the card. The new ContourRoam 2 also came with a nifty little cloth bag that has an attached lens cloth and a small pocket to hold the included memory micro SD card and micro SD to SD adapter. All-in-all a few small improvements that make a great little video camera even better!

Amazing little camera!
This little camera is amazing. The battery life is fantastic, the video quality is the best for the price but the thing that stands out is the ease of use in any situation. The Contour mount system combined with the standard tripod mount gives you endless possibilities to get creative, and finally that single switch is incredibly easy to use. That said there are areas for improvement, the audio quality is ok for the price but could be a little better especially in windy situations. Also Contour should develop an app to be able to make adjustments on the go using a cable and a mobile device (tablet or smartphone) much like the app for the Contour+2 that uses bluetooth. I would definitely recommend this camera!

Good, but not great.
Crossed shopped for a Helmet Cam for several months, read all of the reviews for Go Pro, Contour, Ion, etc. Decided that the picture quality and ease of use for the Contour was excellent considering the $100 price tag for the ROAM 2. The ease of use cannot be beat. Simply slide the switch on the top forward to start filming, slide it back to stop. Its very light and mounted easily on the side of my Bell K-1 Sport helmet. The software for processing the videos installs easy and is simple to use. It was very intuitive and I was uploading and using their entry level editing tools with out any fuss. However, after using it to record several Go Kart races on Dirt Ovals at night and Road Courses during the day I seem to have found where the difference is in the extra $300 for something like a Go Pro Hero 4. There is no image stabilization, so every bounce, bump, and jolt comes through on the video. Do not get me wrong, the picture (during daylight) is crystal clear with great resolution and very good white balance for an amateur video take like myself. The problem is that the video is so bouncy that you get a headache from watching it. In a racing kart with no suspension, the issue is magnified greatly. I also ran into some problems with low light shooting. At our dirt oval, the front stretch has very good lighting, and the back straight is just better than dark. The video portion on the front straight is clear for night time shooting in the track lights. The back stretch portion is pretty much a black screen and you cannot distinguish any features. I left the camera in auto for all settings, so maybe there is something I can tweak for the night races under the lights. All in all, the camera is not bad. However, I wished I had spent more on a higher model camera that had the image stabilization feature built in. The picture quality is great for someone who is going to mount the camera to something that will not be bouncing over constant bumps. However the shaky video renders the camera useless for my application. Pros - Super easy to use Super easy set up Very clear, bright video with out having to mess with the settings Camera's dimensions are ideal for a racing helmet. Cons- No image stabilization, bouncy video. Essentially renders the camera useless for my application in Go Kart racing. Trouble in low light conditions.

I had pondered on this for some time, looking at the Go Pro, for which i nearly pulled the trigger but lost my nerve after not so encouraging reviews. I then thought about a cheaper option but i'm such a HD snob that i decided to check the reviews for this. I need this mostly to capture the stunning Scottish scenery i pass while travelling on my motorbike. It came well packaged and i was happy upon opening to find a sturdy camera with 4gb card and an adapter card for it to slot into for easy plugin to TV, PC etc. There was a mincey instruction picture card with four steps which made obvious what to do. I thought a bit more instructions would have been better but as i rarely read them it wasn't a grudge!! Product website is full of useful info anyway! (Worth visiting for easy to do update on camera also) I seriously took my time mounting on the bottom right side of my helmet. I held it on tightly, recorded for a few seconds then checked the footage. I was delighted to see just the tip of my helmet in the shot so i stuck it on with the super adhesive swivel mount that was provided. This was great for adjusting the angle to match my point of vision. The laser beam test facility is a great trick for testing against the wall before i leave to ensure i'm filming what i want to film. It makes obvious where the camera is pointing. Out on the bike the large sliding record button is idiot proof. Forward and back, start and stop, so easy!! I was delighted with the picture on my mac and had a laugh running it through iMovie to make a quick movie trailer and load on Facebook. The picture i get on my 50 TV is also stunning! Of course the sound is taboo while riding at high speeds but to expect anything else would be stupid! Quick slap of my favourite Ramones tunes on top of the wind buffering sorted that noise out. I am soooo sooooo happy with this camera, i look forward to my rides all the more. Especially now that i have what looks like a mini rocket launcher on the side of my helmet....

I bought both the CR and the CR2 because I like skateboarding, mountain biking, snowboarding, and surfing. I bought the CR elsewhere, but the CR2 from Amazon. Both arrived the same day. At first blush, the CR2 is packaged more conservatively, with disposable cardboard inserts, as opposed to the strange plastic case of the CR. The CR2 and CR both included 1 Rotating Flat Mount, one of those non-rotating right-side mounts, and a lens cover. The CR2 included an extra 3M sticky pad for the rotating mount, however. The CR2 also included a pull-string baggie and a MiniSD card (4G); it was also already charged, which was very nice. Both are of similar weight and look almost the same, with many of the same features. But the CR2 has a lock on the recording button (and for the detail-curious the Contour logos are a bit different). Performance-wise, both seem to work exactly the same. I was a bit disappointed that they're bigger than I imagined. They feel sturdy and aren't unwieldy at all against my helmet--getting them onto my boards is a bit odd, but I'll continue to explore mounting options. The video quality is as good as I'd hoped. Not mind-blowing, but certainly good enough and a lot of fun. I wish there was a way to run the camera, feed it into my laptop, and see the view before mounting onto my helmet. Maybe there is, but I haven't found it yet. Would be nice to confirm a clear image, without a piece of helmet on one side a little more easily (I used masking tape first to guestimate it, and then mounted). Between the two, I'd definitely recommend the CR2. It's supposed to be far more waterpoof, and then it also includes everything you need to get started right out of the box. It is just unfortunate that the colored versions of the CR2 are not yet here in Japan, but if you're in the market for a camera, this may be a good choice for you. I was interested in other cameras, like the GoPro, but ultimately the pricing and styling won out.
