Great way to connect a TV's digital audio output to an old, stereo-only receiver.
Works well. I was able to connect the audio from my TV's digital output to this unit then connect to my old (but wonderful sounding) stereo. I have OTA local TV stations and a streaming device connected to my TV and everything sounds so much better coming through the stereo speakers. Since my stereo receiver does not have any HDMI inputs or outputs, this was a cost effective, simple, effective way to upgrade from TV speakers. I used an old USB phone charger to power the device. The volume dial is a nice touch.

Good little dac
The quality on these appears to have come a long way. Worked fine out of the box. Great for getting music to your stereo receiver. I just unplug the power when using the sound bar.

Works very well
Works well and allows headphone use while not affecting the TV/Sound-bar output while others are watching but don't need headphones. If I'm watching alone and don't want to disturb others I simply mute the sound-bar without affecting the converter output. Two minor complaints prevented a 5-star review. 1)The Optical Cable does not "snap" in so unless the entire module is secured with double-back or velcro tape it easily unplugs. I just used Velcro tape and it solved the issue. 2) Whenever the TV is turned on/off you need to readjust the output volume to the headphones at the module unless you prefer the default mid-level volume. For the cost this puppy works great, feels substantial, and all the minor background sounds as well as dialog come through crystal clear.

Just what I needed!
We bought a new Sony 55" TV that has no RCA audio outputs to go to our vintage Pioneer SX-780 stereo receiver from the late 70's. So, I needed to go from the TV digital audio output to analog RCA audio inputs on the stereo. After reading the reviews and product descriptions of a number of these devices I decided to go with this one. (While I didn't know if I needed it or not, the volume control helped to sway me to this one.) I received the device, and it looks just like the picture on Amazon, and included the optical cable and a USB power cable. I connected a small AC to USB power adapter I had from one of my old cell phones to the switched AC outlet on the back of my stereo and plugged the USB power cable into that, connected the optical cable from the TV to the input and a set of RCA cables I had from the output to my stereo, and it works great. The volume control on the device works, but with the volume control on the stereo I'm not sure I really need it at this point, so I set it in the middle. Sound quality seems just great to me, so I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Best part is the volume control
Had an older DAC that didn't have a volume control AND the volume on it was too low. Caused me to have to crank up the stereo system way beyond the audio level of any other input. Used it for years but it was annoying to have to change the volume so much. Sometimes, would switch to the radio and the volume just blasted because I'd forget to turn it down first. This one has sufficient audio volume and lets me adjust so that it's about the same as the radio tuner, dvd player etc. and I don't have the stereo receiver's volume cranked way up. Working just like it should and was easy to install. You WILL have to provide a USB power module with 1 watt capacity, although the manufacturer provides the cable to the device. (I used an old Samsung phone charger that I had laying around. It claims 2 watts so it should be more than sufficient.)

Works as intended, does Dolby to stereo audio conversion
I have a Tivo EDGE and it does optical audio output with Dolby or just PCM. But the output setting applies both to the optical output and to HDMI, so if turn off Dolby you are turning it off both for the optical and HDMI audio. I want to use an optical to Bluetooth adapter to work with headphones. I could not find one that accepts Dolby encoded optical input, so I tried this adapter. It works great, good quality components, converts the optical Dolby stream to analog stereo audio, but unfortunately, when I hooked the analog audio into the Bluetooth adapter's stereo input (using an RCA to mini plug cable) I wind up with a lot of power hum in the output to the headphones. Unclear what is causing it, but it's there and it's not there when I turn off the Dolby in the Tivo EDGE so it can drive the Bluetooth adapter. So, I'll keep looking for a Dolby optical input to stereo Bluetooth adapter, and maybe I'll find one, but I did not find the combination of discrete components a good solution.

Constantly has to be power-cycled
When it works, it works well. However, as others have stated I have to unplug and re-plug the power to get it to wake up. I've tried both RAW and PCM audio from my TV with no difference. I've had the audio cut off while using it, so it's not a case of it going into a deep sleep while everything else is turned off. The TV I'm using only has the coax audio out so I don't know if it would actually behave using the optical audio option.

Worked well with our new A/V Setup
This little wonder saved the day! Here's our story. We moved and bought a new state of the art LED TV. Our old TV had an analog audio output jack I used to feed audio into a legacy hi-fi system that has phenomenal sound. We just turn on the legacy system for exercise or movies. Alas, the new television had an optical output S/PDIF TOSLINK connector for the audio output, so we needed a clean solution that can decode all the different kinds of audio we might play on the new TV. Since it is a Smart TV, there are apps for YouTube, Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, etc. that output audio in a very wide variety of formats and bitrates. I'm pleased that this unit has faithfully and flawlessly decoded every single digital audio source that we've experimented with. It's nice that this just works. Installation was very easy. You simply connect the included TOSLINK cable from the output on the TV to the input on this product. You connect the analog output jacks (L+R) on this product to the input jacks of your legacy equipment (L+R). They provide a 5V power cable, you provide a USB power port. You connect the included cable to your spare iPhone charger (the small square ones work fine) and turn it on. Again, this was easy and the device worked flawlessly from the first moment we used it until today. If you're looking for a reliable, compatible S/PDIF TOSLINK decoder that can handle the latest audio formats and bitrates and convert to analog for legacy audio equipment or maybe a sound bar, then this product will work perfectly for you. I highly recommend it.

Works well
What you see is what you get. Nice little unit which works well. I donโt have a 5.1 set up though the tv supports it so canโt comment on that, but the unit worked straight out of the box - once I had changed the tv output setting to Optical!

Dolby compatible DAC for Panasonic HZ1000 55โ OLED TV
Used to connect Panasonic HZ1000 OLED TV to an old Pioneer XV-dv131 5.1 audio system. This DAC clearly met the need and working fine. Audio quality is great, no need to buy a sound bar now.

It just works - no more cable moving
Now I can play BluRays, recording or live TV off the cable PVR, or even VHS tapes, and not have to move the home theatre audio input cables. All sound funnels through the flat screen TV on its way to the home theatre amp and speakers. Haven't used the built-in volume control or the 3.5 mm adapter, not sure if that would drive a set of earbuds off the TV. Volume control is the weirdest I've eve seen, with separate "louder" and "softer" buttons on opposite ends of the box...but in my setup I don't need to use the converter to control volume anyway. It says it does Dolby but I haven't verified that yet. Only stereo, not 5.1 surround sound but my speakers aren't set up for surround sound anyway. Pleased at the trouble-free setup. I powered the converter/decoder from a spare USB jack on our cable box that isn't used for anything anyway. The speed of delivery was the main reason for buying here, though the "guaranteed delivery" was again off by one day.
