Is the usb wireless receiver required to use this mouse? i don't want to use a usb port for a mouse.

Yes. The same USB receiver can also be used for most other wireless Logitech devices. If you are worried about running out of USB ports, get a USB hub.

Is the scroll wheel also a click wheel? Not the side to side tilt-- can you press it down like a button (anyone who uses 3D software will know)

Yes. I use it all the time instead of CTRL+Lclick when opening new browser tabs

How is this mouse on different surfaces like granite countertops, wooden tables, or carpet?

I don't know about granite, but I have a ply wood desk at home and even though I also have a mouse pad, it has worked fine when I haven't had it. We also have a waxed one that it works well on too.

Does it work with Windows 8?

Yes, it does. I have two computers. One runs Windows 7 and the other Windows 8 and I use the mouse on both.
