Structure and Style, first published in 1962 and expanded in 1979, fills the need for new ways of analysis that put 20th-century music in perspective. It spans forms in use before 1600 through forms and techniques in use today. Anthology of Musical Forms provides musical examples of forms treated in Structure and Style. Some examples are analyzed throughout. Most are left for the student to analyze. These books reflect Leon Stein's impressive background as student, musician, and composer. Stein studied composition with Leo Sowerby, Frederick Stock (conductor of the Chicago Symphony), and orchestration with Eric DeLamarter, his assistant. He earned M. Mus and Ph.D degrees at DePaul University and was associated with its School of Music as director of the Graduate Division and chairman of the Department of Theory and Composition until his retirement in 1976. He has composed a wide variety of works, including compositions for orchestra, chamber combinations, two operas, and a violin concerto. Review: Concise but encompassing range of issues! - Essential information for the musician! Worst book from Alfred Music Publishing!!!
5 stars for the content of the book, I specially like the historically approach. 1 star for the quality (surprisingly bad for an Alfred edition !!!) , the pages fall apart probably because of the poor quality and quantity of the glue, also the letters are quite small and difficult to read. I will probably tie properly the book so I can read it!

Great Content Terrible Format, Binding
Others have pointed this out. Great, fantastic content. But awful book design; - terrible font choice, hard to read - awful binding, pages will fall out - book and font too small. Why would any one print a book in this format when the purpose is to study and read music notation? Recommend a pdf and reading on a large iPad.

Not so satisfied customer: Excellent content, bad edition...
Excellent book! I give 5 stars for the content of this book. Great work by Mr. Leon Stein. This is probably the best book published on this subject (this is not only my opinion, but the opinion of several music teachers I know). However, I give 1 star to the edition. I bought my book one year ago and it is already ruined. The pages are loosen, exactly as mentioned in the other review. The publisher should come up with a different edition. This is a great book and it deserves something better. It deserves, at least, an edition that you can open and read without worrying whether it will be broken to pieces.

Great Content, Poor Product Quality
Structure and Style: The Study and Analysis of Musical Forms This is one of the classic college textbooks for musical form. Its a shame that the new publisher, Alfred, released a product whose quality is so poor that the pages come unglued from the binding each time one turns a page. The material is fundamental to understanding this field of study, but the risk in winding up with a pile of loose pages suggests that looking for an old, used hardback copy is a better avenue for obtaining this text.
