Baldur's Gate Box Set (Sweden)

First off, any person who has played a bunch of computer games will tell you this: The amount of fun you have in a game, after say the first day of playing it, is totally irrelevant to the game's graphics. The BG collection is a good example. I too think it is better than the Neverwinter series, for one main reason: BG and especially BGII are extremely open and non-linear. Yes, of course the game has limits, but there are so many optional areas, quests, characters, and items, and more importantly, so many decisions you have to make in each play-through that open some doors and close others, that you can play this game probably ten times in a row and still discover fun new things. Even concepts which seem like game-universe "laws" can be surpassed once you gain enough skill as a player. I'm not talking about cheating. For example, you might think the Cowled Wizards are impossible to resist when they arrest you, right? Nope, not for a creative tactician. Or, you might think that it's impossible to beat the game using just three, two, or even one single character. But it's actually very possible--just more intellectually challenging and rewarding. Most do that with a fighter/mage or fighter/thief, though, to get the maximum number of abilities. But you couldn't do it with a single, lonely armor-less kensai fighter, right? Think again... The great thing about these "implied" challenges, in addition to every other normal challenge in the game, is that even though they are ridiculously difficult, you still don't need a cheat sheet to do them, because since the game contains hundreds of items, spells, and abilities, (access to all of which have a sort of "open this door and shut that one" style) there are still a million different ways to complete even the most difficult challenges. This is why the Baldur's Gate games are huge fun the first time, for the above-average (not great) story, and even more the second and third, to explore all the variations and possibilities within that story. Finally, a note for new players: =============================== The only complaint I would have is that in order to play a Fighter character, you can't just choose one weapon specialization and go with it--you have to have advance knowledge of what weapons exist in order not to be stuck with crappy weapons during critical endgame duels. If you are about to buy this game, let me tell you a few things that will save the need for the cheapening feeling of using a game guide or deciding to reboot your character halfway through: -The one and only great 2-handed sword can only be used by Thieves and Paladins, though it comes early in the game. It is by far the best weapon in the game -There is a good mix of low-to-mid level longswords, but few great ones -There is only one good bastard sword and it comes late in the game -There is only one good battle axe, and it is great, but it comes late in the game -There are a good mix of low-to-high level Halberd weapons -More attacks per round *usually* nets you more total damage than a higher damage per hit weapon, because all the different weapon types do not have a wide spread of damage ranges. I.E, most of the damage you do at a high level does not come from your weapon. -Some liches can only be hit by +4 or higher weapons. -NEVER be a sorcerer for your first playthrough...you will inevitably choose spells that sound good on paper but fall flat in practice...be a wizard instead, you will get more (real-life) experience that way. That's it--all the rest you can figure out yourself, with a little patience and experimentation. Happy adventuring!

To begin this is a wonderful set of games that everyone should play. However this particular version has some "difficulties" because Atari just sorta shoved it on the disks. In particular this breaks the Bgmain.exe so that it doesn't work because they didn't properly set up the .ini file and it looks for a folder for disk 6, which no longer exists. This keeps you from installing the major mods that merge BG 1+2 into one continuous game, exceedingly popular mods these are very nice to have. And so with out further diversion, I will explain how to fix them. It took me 4 hours and a merger of no less than 6 separate fixes found online to make it work, so I figured I'd save you all the trouble. How to merge Baldur's Gate 4in1 pack on Windows 7 64 Bit, even though everything is terribly broken in the 4in1 pack: (In order to make this work, I had to merge the information of no less than 6 separate fixes....) NOTE: Make sure all installs are custom and set to maximum or full. 1. Install BG1 (Make a new folder on the C drive, NOT in program files or program files x86) 2. Install TOSC 3. Install BG2 (Make a new folder on the C drive separate from the one for BG1, NOT in program files or program files x86) 4. Install TOB 5. REMOVE ALL DISKS 6. Install patches: BGTalesUS5512 BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26498_ENGLISH BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26499_BETA 7. Set BGMain.exe in BG II main folder to run as administrator 8. Extract Ascension64-BGT-WeiDU-1.15, copy all of these files into the primary BG II folder. (AKA Baldur's Gate Triology) 9. I picked up this 4-pack as a former Baldur's Gate player. A friend of mine and I wanted to take a break from MMPORGs and go back to a little old-school Dungeons and Dragons play. The games are as good as they were many years ago (though it is difficult to bear with some of the slow graphics). The unfortunate part is that it appears Baldur's Gate will not work over wireless internet connections. We tried every which-way to make it work, but it just will not connect. All in all, a good product at a good price.

If you are a fan of classic role playing games this set is for you. It contains Balder's Gate, Balder's Gate: Sword Of the Coast; Balder's Gate: Shadow Of Amn; and Balder's Gate: Throne Of Bhaal. A good set of Balder's Gate games in one collection at a very reasonable price. Although these games are not listed as being playable on Win 7, I was able to install each game without any problem. (My System: Win 7 32-bit, Intel 3.0 gig P4 CPU; 4 gigs RAM, ViewSonic 17" LCD monitor running at 1366x768, HIS HD-4670 Video card with 1 gig RAM, SB 5.1 Audigy sound card a with SB 5.1 speaker system.) Each game installs one at a time and I had no problems getting each one of them installed and running. The way I do my installs is to install each game then test it to see if it runs OK. All four games cranked up and ran OK. I had to adjust the resolution a bit as these games don't support my monitor's native resolution and when this happens, I can normally use either 1024x768 or 800x600 as a sub. This was the case here. The only problem I ran into on the install was one of the games didn't like the OS and wanted to say I didn't have a compatible OS. Since this set of games is suppose to run and Vista, I managed to skip by this and once the game installed it ran fine.(BTW: My monitor came with drivers that I've noted seems to add the 1366x768 resolution as a choice when selected a resolution of most newer games. A real time saver when setting your res.) All played like the classic RPG they are and so it's quite easy to lost time playing them. Overall, a good collection. Great!

Baldur's Gate was one of the first PC games I ever played. And it will always be one of my favorites. It's a game with a slight learning curve, but if you're at all familiar with DnD, then it's not bad. Basically, you can't just go in and hack everything to bits and win. You have to plan. You need to prepare for every battle. Leveling up is EXTREMELY important (compared to the Diablo games, where another level is just another 5 stat points basically). Baldur's Gate took everything I knew about RPGs and made them better. In fact, RPG gaming, at the time, wasn't very big. But BG basically revived the entire genre because it had such a great reception (other games were renewing interest like Fallout, but BG was really the big fish at the time). Baldur's Gate 2 is no different. All it did was fix the problems with Baldur's Gate (made seeing things easier, had more customization, had more side quests, etc.) and make the game bigger. You can even reuse your old character from BG1 in BG2 (in fact, you SHOULD since it's a continuation of the previous story). I've played these games dozens of times now. I've made so many wizards and rogues, and have made a few fighters, paladins, monks, etc. I probably reinstall and replay this game once a year, and I've still not even played half the classes. There is just so much you can do with the game, its replayability is enormous. The story is the same every time, but it's still one of my favorite stories (and Sarevok from BG1 is still one of my favorite villains of all time). The writing is clever, hilarious, emotional, everything. The characters all have meaning and their own little tics and quirks (from Khalid's st-st-st-stuttering to Viconia's sassing to Minsc's ABSOLUTE HILARIOUS AND BAD-ASSEDNESS). This game is just incredible, and the fact that my brothers and friends have beaten it and started a new game so many times should tell you something about its appeal. I love this game so much. Everyone should play it at least once.

I loaded both of these games on my machine and they wouldn't work. I erased them and just loaded on Baulders Gate and played it a few times. When I finally loaded up BG 2 It quit on me again. I am in the process of erasing them and loading just BG 2 by itself. This game runs very slow compared to todays games or even those of just a few years ago. I guess for it's day it was new and exciting though I'd expected more out of it than what it had. I remember a "free" game that did more and faster, but didn't have the cinematic artfulness of the scenes. I didn't like that you had no choice in having the dark or unexplored land that would only reveal itself as you approached it. I got to one point where I couldn't get any further for some reason. I'd gone around all the places I thought I could go but it wouldn't let me go any further. I've played this game about 6 times and so far have been stuck at the same spot. It's ironic that I've never had this trouble with any other game I've ever played to date.

i had no problems installing or playing these games on my xp based pc. none at all, unless you consider not being able to export or import characters a problem. that's the only trouble i had. i accept the fact that d&d games are fantasy and as such i expect them to be unrealistic. but these games were beyond fantastic. they are ludicrous. i say this because i shouldn't have to use a walk-through to play the game, but that's what i ended up doing. then i progressed to using the cheat codes. why do i need cheat codes to play a game? my complaint is that without the cheat codes and walk-through, i found the games - esp. 2,3, &4 - unplayable. my second complaint is that the storyline is tenuously connected, and frequently digressive. i ultimately ended up with items that i was unsure had reached their end of life cycle. there were way too many quests that served no purpose, only contributing to making the game drawn out and boring. and hearing the same dialogue from the main characters got aggravating to the point where i just wanted to abandon them or kill them off myself, or have them killed off. i honestly don't see how this game got so many five star reviews. life is too short to spend it bogged down in a fantasy game that requires all of my time. sure, baldurs gate is a classic d&d game; it has a beautiful presentation, nice graphics, and it's fun. but it does drag on and on, and on and on and on ...

For depth of story, flexibility to play it in so many different ways and sheer playability, this is probably the best series of games ever. I began playing BG about 10 years ago and have just started again. It has hooked me the second time as it did the first. For the type of game it is (CRPG), the graphics were amazing for their time. Compared with current new releases, the graphics do not match up but there is a strong community of 'modders' that have helped keep this series fresh over the past decade. Higher resolutions can now be played. I strongly recommend visiting the websites of Spellhold Studios, Black Wyrm Lair, Gibberlings Three and the Pocket Plane Group. You will need to apply official patches to these games anyway, but adding BG1TuTu allows the game to be played seamlessly from BG1 thru BG2:TOB, using the BG2 engine. Other mods allow for additional quests and NPC that can enhance your gaming experience further. Just make sure to read instructions carefully to avoid compatibility issues. For the number of hours playability, this is great value for money.

What with better graphics, much better engines and far more intelligent A.I. it was pretty much inevitable that these games (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape, etc) would become eclipsed by their descendents. There's only SO good you can make certain elements of a game though, and Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 are definitely the pinnacle of great writing (although, to be honest, I have spotted several typos throughout the game - perhaps it's to be expected with the literally tens of thousands of lines of dialogue written for these games), great ambience which really immerses you in the storyline and a fantastic music score (especially in Baldur's Gate 2). I bought this compilation pack recently having NEVER played a Baldur's Gate game before. I love RPGs, but I had never played one made before Oblivion, nor had I any experience with Dungeons and Dragons. Having said that however, the game was so damn immersive that I forgot I was playing a game over 10 years old (about 90 "game industry years" old). I can honestly see why Baldur's Gate/2 are regarded as two of the greatest games ever made, as they're two games that have really stood the test of time. However, no game is without its problems, and for a list of potential buyers, here are a couple that you may need to take note of: *You will ->>DEFINITELY<<- need to install some patches for these games, otherwise you may be subject to a large amount of glitches, script errors, NPCs constantly appearing "busy" and a host of other problems. This is somewhat remedied by the fact that it takes literally a couple of minutes and the patches are freely available on the official Bioware website. *I had a real headache getting Tales of the Sword Coast (The BG1 expansion pack) to work alongside BG1 vanilla. Eventually I got it sorted out, but phew, I recommend playing through BG1 vanilla first before installing the expansion pack and NOT installing it halfway through playing Baldur's Gate 1 like I did; it completely messed up my save files. Strongly recommend backing up your save files before attempting to install it, and if you do decide to install it, don't let the "insert disc 6" scare you, that's just the people who made these games not checking them properly before they put them out for retail >_> *In Baldur's Gate 1, you can't pause when you go to the inventory screen. Ever. This may sound like a minor complaint but it really grated on me throughout the game, to the point where I always had to check whether or not I had enough arrows in my quiver, or enough health potions equipped before every battle. Luckily they took this annoying feature out of Baldur's Gate 2, so I guess I'm not the only one it really pissed off. At the end of the day, this game is not without its minor flaws, but its definitely one of the better games of a past gaming era. Easily gets a 9.5/10+ in my book, and I'm sure any RPG fan would absolutely love these masterpieces. Also note that you don't need to have an understanding of D&D to play as the games hide a lot of the complex rules with scripting - although take note that in the case of "Armor Class", lower = better :)

UPDATE: Both games now working thanks to the help of Chris Taylor at interplay.com pointing me to the patches available at sorcerers.net Great games, now they are eventually working. Only £3.99, but it doesn't work, and would cost more in postage and petrol to return. There are 4 DVD for BG1 & 2. DVD 1 installs BG1 without problem. DVD 2 installs the TotSC expansion but game then displays message "This version will only run in Canada and the United States!". DVD 3 installs BG2 SoA but game crashes on startup with message "An assertion failed in ChDimm.cpp at line 599. Programmer says: Unable to open BIF:DATA/Hd0GMosc.bif" If you can fix these issues then spend £4 otherwise save your money.

This Baldur's Gate collection gets you both games and their respective expansions - total value for money. Each game comes on a DVD (with the exp. on a seperate CD), so you don't have to change CDs like in the old days. All areas are accessible from their DVD, and from the expansion CD once you engage the expansion. The game isn't very resource demanding either (minimum CPU 300MHz, 64Mb RAM, DVD-ROM), so you don't need a top-of-the-line gaming PC to play it. Simple, cheap and a world of fun... hence the quote from the geek from "The Simpsons": Best... game... ever. The game itself is an absolute gem. Starting out in the small town of Candlekeep in BG1, you set out on a quest to learn about your heritage and find your place in the world. Sound simple? Well, it ain't. As the story goes on, the web is spun ever greater and so is the world you inhabit. A great amount of subquests help you find yourself and shape your character... you choose your path towards good or evil - or something in between - and build your party of followers and friends accordingly. You will fight (a lot!) your way through the various areas (and reload whenever you die), killing monsters, adventurers, bounty hunters and bad guys and becoming very, very strong doing it. You choose your alignment (good/neutral/evil) in the beginning of the game, and what type of character you want to be: fighter, spellcaster, thief... and you set your abilities: what kind of weapons you're good at using, your strength vs. intelligence, constitution etc. As you level up from all the experience, you continue to advance in these skills, becoming quite a character. The story line is one of the most impressive I've seen in a game; the continuous progression throughout both games, the inclusion of the quests and subquests in said story as well as the development of relationships between the people in your party just sucks you in and presto! it's three in the morning and you begin to consider staying home from school to play some more. Seriously, there's a reason why this game has a huge pack of fans around the globe. It contains so many races, so many stories, so many things to collect, sell, buy and use for your benefit... so many people, so many areas, so much to do that after a while you begin feeling like it's actually your REAL life going on inside that monitor in front of you. Just the way we geeks want it...

I bought this to see if I would like the upcoming BG3. So far, it hasn't been convincing. I installed BG1 on my 4Tb D drive, which has 3.5Tb spare. Launching the game produced an error saying not enough disc space. My default C has 1.5Tb, so I find it hard to imagine how there could not be enough. I suspect when this was written someone used a 32 bit integer for the amount of disc chunks, and this has now overflowed. I uninstalled and installed it on C. This got slightly further, but produced a piece of screen occupying the top left quarter of the monitor, whilst it played some white noise through the speakers. I had to reboot to get out of it. I then tried installing BG2. This appears to work AFAICT, so now I need to discover the key bindings as there doesn't seem to be a within game page telling me what they are, and the box set contains no instructions whatsoever. I have now succeeded in installing BG1 on windows XP where it seems to work. I'll give it a go to see if it works on windows 7, but I suspect the big OS functionality changes from XP to 7 mean it probably won't. Somebody answered a question saying it did work on windows 10. I have to assume they only meant BG2, whereas I was asking about the entire set of games.
