Basketball Sim Fans Beware - Everyone Else Enjoy!
I must start by saying I know I bought this very late in the life of PS3... but it was really worth the wait! -- Menu/Interface -- It's nothing special but easy enough to get yourself through to find what you want. - Difficulty -- I honestly saw no difference between the 3 levels I tried; no matter what everyone shoots an absurd % from the floor it seems (more on this to follow). -- Gameplay -- This is one of the big positives in the game. Players move fluently. Your CPU teammates will actively cut and work to get open for you; it's fun to just hold the ball and watch someone in the low post just work their tail off to set themself up for you. Alley-Oops look incredible when you are fortunate enough to time the pass just right (it's a challenge, but to be fair I don't believe it should be easy to perform one, either). While we're on the subject of dunking - the dunks, along with their variety, are just plain nasty in this game - in a good way. You feel the emphasis in the controller and just by the manner in which they captured the animation. It doesn't have that lifeless feel I always got in the Live and 2k titles (which I own many variations of). Big plus there from me. The shooting system is very nice, once you get used to knowing when to release. There is an arrow system that will appear over the head of your player once you initiate the shot and if you time the release well it will be yellow or green when you release. These shoots almost always go in (and I do mean almost always..). If the arrow is red upon release it's basically doomed to failure. Another nice feature for gameplay is the rebounding. When the other team shoots and it is off target, an icon will appear in the general area the ball is going to land so you can position yourself accordingly. For the most part, the ball bounce trajectories make sense too, which is an added bonus. Perimeter defense is nearly impossible in the game; anyone can make it rain from long distance (even Yao Ming, lol..). With that said, you are still able to play interior defense and pick up your fair share of blocks. This at least gives you some motivation to stay with your guy and contest drives to the hoop. -- Graphics -- Even by today's standards for the ps3, these player modules are GORGEOUS. I do not believe they have all the details such as tatoos but overall all the players look incredible. I'm partly hooked on the game just due to this. Along with this the arenas look great and the nets (a big deal for me) look and move very much like the real thing on shots. Graphics were expected to be good due to the HD rendering, but even with that expectation, I found myself left impressed. -- Presentation -- This was one of the big drawbacks for me in the game. Do you like cuts to replays after a nice play or break away dunk? You will not find it here - not a single one. Do you enjoy the recap of highlights for your player of the game during the Post Game Wrap Up? Nothing to be seen here either. This isn't a deal breaker for me, but a very noticeable absence after playing the other basketball titles over the years. They could have easily added a little something here in my opinion. At the very least they give you a quick Pre Game introduction - but even this I have an issue with. It's common for team's to have their franchise player introduced last amongst starters to get the big crowd reaction, players are introduced by order of position it seems. Lebron being introduced in the middle of his team just seemed odd. Speaking of Lebron, there's also no Pre Game player rituals to speak of. Having played 2k9 I partly expected to see it in this title as well. No luck, but again, not a deal breaker - just something I had expected to see. -- Parting Thoughts -- If you go into this game and find a way to not constantly compare it to 2k, you will find there is a lot of fun to be had. With that in mind, please keep this in mind -> fans of basketball sims will likely HATE this game. You will commonly find bench players/role players shooting over 70/80%. I'd compare this game to a 5 on 5 version of NBA Jam. Crazy shooting %'s, nearly impossible perimeter defense, almost constantly open lanes for highlight reel dunks (just run the pick n roll all day via D Pad Down). The game is a lot of fun if you give it a chance; it's definately a unique basketball experience that I will happily keep in rotation with my all-time favorite titles for the ps3 -> NBA Live 2010, NBA 2k11, and now NBA 09 The Inside. Between those 3 titles I have just about every basketball game need (and when I need a break I can throw in my copy of NBA Jam).

Sony B-Ball Sucks
This is the worst basketball video game I have ever played. It reminded me of Celtics vs Lakers on my Tandy 1000, and that was great considering it was 25 years ago. The graphics are sub par, the gameplay is horrible, and there is nothing to make you want to play it again. They have mini games where you play for money to buy...a wrist band to help your shot??? Jordans to make you jump higher??? C'mon MAN!!! Put the money elsewhere.

Very Different from NBA 08
I actually did not believe the critics poor review of this game because they said the same thing about NBA 08 and I really enjoyed that game. NBA 09 The Inside makes a poor attempt at making their game more like the other higher rated basketball games out there. In doing so, they removed the good qualities that set it apart and drew in people like myself who just want to play some fun basketball. I enjoyed the arcade-like features of the 08 game and I thought the graphics were great. The Inside took a nose dive with this new version, especially with the graphics. Other reviews speak of the glitches that occur during game play and sadly enough I found this to be very true. About one out of every four games I play freezes up and there is nothing I can do except restart the game. They did make a franchise mode where you can create your own draft and I like the option to make five custom players that you can upgrade along the way. Overall you are better off with one of the other NBA games for 09 or I still like the 08 version of this game.
