Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Processing Issues, Revised and Updated Edition [Biel, Lindsey, Peske, Nancy, Grandin PhD, Temple] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Processing Issues, Revised and Updated Edition Review: best book for no-nonsense approach to helping parents - I love this book! I read several before this one. The writers are kind enough to direct you where to go find something you need for a sensory smart child. This book discussed learning disabilities, different developmental delays and milestones. I talked about diiferent behaviors and what to expect and how to respond. This book is good from infancy to adulthood. It gave recomended reading lists and websites through out the book. As a parent,a childs new diagnosis for ASD or any developmental delay is tough and you start to seek sources for reference. This book eliminates the fillers/fluff in some books and tells good information about getting assistance, tools, toys, and things that parents need to become proactive. Arming yourself with knowledge helps you through the helplessness. This book gives you quality resources to immediately start helping your child. This book contained more than all the others together. It has helped me think more sensory smart and realize that I needed to reorganize our home and life to improve my son's life so that he could thrive. I have and will continue to use this book and refer to it as he grows. IT IS A GREAT TOOLBOX! Review: BEST Sensory Book ever! - Having read all the books in this genre, I'm particualarly impressed with this one written by Lindsey Biel and nancy Peske. The book is PACKED with information and I find myself using it often as a reference. The authors start with understaning your child (and I find this helps understand yourself and family too!). They explain the seven senses in detail and how and why their functioning is important and how their senses alter their behavior. The next section is about working with Occupational Therapists and how YOU can help your child at home, in school and in the community. They go through EVERYTHING; from eating (at home and in restaurants - including special feeding issues!), potty training, the dreaded birthday parties and family get togethers, and much more... How to decorate and make your house more sensory friendly is explored as well as how to advocate for your child in their school. It's seriously a one stop shop book. There is too much info for me to list - it's all in there. The writers are clear and discriptive, making a sometimes difficult subject matter easy to understand and apply to your every day life. A MUST READ section is "Quick Tips for Calming an Overwhelmed Child." Thank you, thank you, thank you for this priceless advise. This book is fabulous!

Excellent Information for Parents
We have a child who has been struggling in certain areas, and SPD has been brought up in our regular pediatrician appointments. I read this book ahead of some assessments we have scheduled to feel better prepared for that discussion. This had such great information that has helped us tune into triggers for our child and change some little things at home to help while we wait on the formal assessments. It's helped me be more understanding as to why my child may be reacting in certain ways and made me feel more empowered as a parent to be an advocate for my child.

Great book
I love this book… The only reason I took a star off is cause I haven’t finished it yet, and but I’ll tell you what as I read it I’m just saying the word wow over and over again noticing all the interesting information and similar things that I see in my son so definitely a good read so far!!!

Very helpful book
I bought this for my daughter to try and get a handle on managing her neurodivergent 5 year old. She has put into practice several things in the book and it has made a remarkable improvement in behaviors in her daughter.

this book is great for understanding sensory processing issues
this book is great for understanding sensory processing issues. it was recently brought to my attention my son has sensory issues, don't know if he's on the Autism spectrum or not. this book helped me understand what this is, why it is, and how to handle situations and help regulate my son when needed. on the surface my son looks "normal", but when it's too loud or too noisy or we have to go to the dentist, it's a crazy anxiety ridden experience that neither of us know how to handle. great book with helpful techniques to understand and help my son.

A must have...if I must say
If you have a child with sensory processing disorder or are related to one, teach, spend time around such as baby sit or even are in Sunday school with one then I highly suggest reading this book. It will answer many of your questions and point you in directions you hadn't thought of previously open or available to you. Both my children are unlucky enough to have this, and were thought to be lost causes in public school at the ripe ages of 5 and 8 due to their "reactions". I would ask for help but only received social skills...since that had to be the cause...behavioral problems. After 3 years of similar issues you would think the school would have tried to help but not until I took them out and decided to home school via an online public school did I start to see results. I got an IEP for the eldest, the youngest's self esteem blossomed since she now wasn't thought of as dumb because she couldn't pass a spelling test. I have learned so much and continue to by reading all the literature such as this book has to offer. I find my youngest is a seeker and my eldest is an avoider, which really makes sense and knowledge is power. Good luck to all you families out there and God Bless each and everyone one of your little ones that have to endure this disorder. God gives us special packages wrapped in different bows...ours are just a tad more special! Right?

Fabulous book. I'm an independent paediatric OT. Im contacted by so many mum's who have no access to an OT who has specialist experience in sensory processing issues. Although the section on finding an OT is about the system in the USA the book is jam packed with information and advice for everyday issues. Lyndsay Beil's books are a great resource.

I don't know what my partner would of done if she did not read this book. It helped us understand our child's needs much more than we realised! A must buy!
