Reliable Budget Shimano Rear Derailleur For 7 And 8 Speed Bikes
TL;DR: Solid entry level Shimano rear derailleur that shifts reliably for 7 and 8 speed setups when installed and adjusted correctly. I picked up this Shimano Tourney TX RD TX800 as a replacement derailleur for a basic city and light trail bike. For this purpose it has performed as advertised. Once installed and dialed in, the shifting across the cassette is predictable, with gears engaging cleanly as long as the cable tension and limit screws are set properly. I paired it with a matching Shimano shifter and a standard 7 speed freewheel, and the components work together without drama. This is an entry level unit, so the materials lean more toward stamped steel and basic finishes rather than the lighter alloys you see on higher groups, but that is reflected in the price. For commuter and recreational riding, the extra weight is not very noticeable and the derailleur feels robust enough to handle daily use. The medium cage length provides enough capacity for a reasonably wide range cassette, which is helpful if the bike is used in varied terrain. Installation is straightforward if you have some familiarity with derailleur setup or are willing to follow a guide. The B tension, high, and low limit adjustments respond as expected, and the cable pinch bolt is easy to access. In my experience, once everything is set, the derailleur holds its adjustment well and only needs occasional minor tweaks as the cable stretches. This is only an opinion, not objective truth, since results will depend heavily on the condition of the rest of the drivetrain and the quality of the installation. Overall, for an affordable replacement or upgrade on a basic 7 or 8 speed bike, this derailleur is a practical choice that does what it claims to do. Direct fit
I was pleased to find that this derailuer was available. It's a direct replacement for the old one. It installed easily, was fairly simple to set up and adjust, and got me up and running for my commute to work again. The only reason for the 4 star rating is that I had to replace it in the first place.

Functional and great value
I had an old seven speed derailleur probably from the 90s that "crashed" into a wheel and destroyed it. This replacement worked well without any other changes and the cost was low.

Nice! Hope this one is more stout than the last Shimano derailer. So far so good!
