Powerful & quiet. A good deal for a European vacuum.
After using the Emer Galileo for about a year, I can recommend it for its overall capability, design. Although not amazingly strong, it is powerful. I have found it is effective and easy to use on either floors or carpet with the switchable brush/floor air-driven "powerhead" (which is "powered" from the airflow, not electric power.) It has a very long cord, and quiet, at least if you don't turn up the power to maximum -- which is not often needed, in my experience. The main housing has a compartment for the tools, including a small dust brush, a wand, and a small air-powered brush for upholstery. The main unit, covered mostly in sturdy plastic, is not too heavy or bulky. The wand or suction tube also seems well-made from stainless steel with some plastic fittings, and the hose is touted as extra-long (but just long enough, in my opinion). I have rated the Galileo four instead of five stars for several minor issues: - The bag-compartment parts seem a bit flimsy. Two black plastic parts, the latch-release and the bag-holder, can easily pop out and be tricky to put back in place with the bag. (When removing the old bag, observe carefully how everything is arranged.) - For the first few months, a slight buzzing came from the motor when the power was turned to high, but after that it disappeared. - The instruction manual is very sketchy and doesn't give you much useful information, such as where to order bags. - Replacement parts are either unavailable or overpriced. I am looking for one of two small rubber wheels for the powerhead that has disappeared, although it doesn't impair the function. But I can't find just the wheels; a new powerhead and wand is sold Emer.usa for nearly twice the price as the original vacuum. (Maybe I should get another and use this one for spare parts....) - The only replacement bags now available seem to be half the size of the original Micropor Microfiltration bags that it came with. However, the original bags were slightly oversized for the compartment, so the ones being sold currently by Emer (5 for $13, free shipping) might be the correct size. Only they do not claim to be microfiltration, just "electrostatic filter" bags. At least they fit and seem to work fine. I will just have to change them more often. In spite of the above quibbles, especially for the low price of just $125, this is a fine vacuum that may be comparable to higher-priced ones that I have used from Electrolux, Panasonic, Kenmore. I also considered the Miele models, but the lowest-price one with a carpet powerhead is much higher. (A relative recently purchased a Miele and rates it highly but it cost over four times as much as my Emer.)

Love it - What bags does it take?
I knew going in it wasn't targeted for heavy carpet use, but I'm in an apartment with not much of it. On bare floors, this thing can pull dirt into it from inches away from the attachment, it's unbelievable. Even on the carpet, it does a pretty decent job with the non-powered carpet attachment but the bare floor attachment works really well too. Only 2 issues to this point, my 11 year old son broke the metal extension stop, so keeping the long extension extended no requires real jamming it open, and subsequently having to tap it hard to collapse it for storage. I've taken it apart to try to fix it, but it appears he broke off a piece of it that "locks" it in place when extended. Second issue is that I can not for the life of me find replacement bags... I have the part number from the manufacturer, but searching for the part or model number online reveals no clues, except for the manual in pdf form. I'm down to 2 new bags and then I'm really going to be stuck. If anyone knows what bags these take, I'd really appreciate it.

Great until it died
I have had this machine for 4.5 years. It worked great up till now with the exception that the power and cord return buttons started to stick, but now it's completely dead. I had expectations that this unit would last longer. Now it's very expensive landfill. Somewhat disappointed. Emer did offer to replace the body for $150 (and mentioned that the average unit lasts about 7 years which also seems short), but given the life of this unit and the fact that most of the accessories are cracked, I took a pass and went with a new Shark Upright since the reviews looked really good. Pros: Good power Great on bare floors Cons Not so great on carpet Power and cord return buttons stuck Furniture and crevice tool on the small side Expensive bags Relatively short life

Save used bags, plastic latch broke, good model otherwise, warranty will not be honored.
I would recommend owners of this vac to cut the cardboard shields off the used bags. The new bags seem to be discontinued. However, when you have the shield, it is easy to convert ANY brand bag into Emer! Just use Emer, sorry, Elmer glue... The plastic latch releasing the metal wand extension broke off just from dropping the wand on the floor. Otherwise, good unit for the price, especially when most of you floors are bare. Brushes carpets too. Update: Found Emer USA offices: Amazon does not allow a link, but look up my complaint at NJ BBB searching for Emer. Unfortunately Elmer-USA web site is not manned. The phone is not answering. If you purchase this item, consider the warranty through Elmer-USA (and this is what the seller promised me in writing) non-existent. I e-mailed them a month ago about a broken triangular latch for extending the wand - no response. I ordered replacement bags a month ago - they did not come. Wondering if my CC was charged.

Bags are inexpensively available directly from the manufacturer.
We had the Botticelli for 14 years. It still works but the cord finally stuck. That will be repaired, but I decided to get this one, as well since they seem to be long out of production. I love this vacuum. It is a bargan.

Not worth the money. A cheaply made vacuum cleaner.
Not very strong suction. Cheaply made, full bag indicator doesn't work. Hard to change bag.

High Quality, Performance and Value
After spending many hours researching vacuums that would care for antique rugs (actually clean and groom without damaging them), wood floors, and berber (or low pile) carpet, I finally found this brand. Most of what you read about these days is Dyson, which is powerful but far too damaging to fine carpet or berber. Many of the models cater to wall to wall carpeting, or are good for floors and area rugs and not carpet. Finding a quality brand that meets our floor needs proved difficult. Additionally, a strong point of this Emer is it's very light weight canister, long hose, supreme quality motor (which is very quiet) and excellent HEPPA technology. The air smells cleaner when you use this machine. It has a parquet floor brush with natural bristles that is designed to take in all particles, spits nothing out. The power of the machine and the parquet nozzle will handle wood floors, long hose to do stairs easily, and this brush deeply cleans and grooms fine wool rugs. Pet hair is no problem for this vacuum. If you have further need to clean carpet or berber, Emer sells a turbine power brush that is also fantastic. Powered by the vacuum's suction (not a separate motor) this piece cleans as well or better than a power brush, but again, without any damage to your carpet's fibers. The unit comes with small attachments that live in a compartment within the machine, but you can also purchase some nice extras such as a stair cleaning kit and a turbine hand brush for upholstery. This products quality level is at least on par with Miele's similar unit, at hundreds of dollars less. The motor is guaranteed seven years and my guess is it's a lifetime machine. I actually bought mine from the main Emer office in NJ, who were very helpful and can assist with finding the best model and attachments for your needs. Great investment.
