Does the 16 inch Mac fit?

No. The width of the case is such that even a slim 15 inch laptop causes the case to be bursting at the seams (zipper barely closes). Get the 15 inch version of this case at least and you SHOULD be OK, though I cannot guarantee a proper fit.

What does the inside of the body facing lumbar compartment look like? Big enough for shoes or a lunch?

Unfortunately, no. It’s flat, but dies run the full width. If you put anything bulky like shoes, it would be very uncomfortable, if you could get them in there at all. A raincoat or jacket, yes. Shoes or lunch, def no.
