Hot Wheels ID Aston Martin One-77

My stepdad is obsessed with hot wheels so bought him this for Christmas and he loves it so much he now wants the whole collection!!

Excellent little car in a very smart presentation box. Perfect stocking filler. Good value for money.

After the comments I made in my review of the Hot Wheels ID 71 Lamborghini Miura you wouldn't have thought I would have got this Aston Martin, but I admit I have a weakness for these cars, and I knew what I was getting myself in to. Hot Wheels id cars are special versions of normal Hot Wheels cars with the addition of an NFC circuit embedded on their underside. You install the iPhone or Google Play app, scan the car - I imagine that if your phone doesn't have NFC then it might struggle, but it worked with my iPhone 7 Plus - and your car is added to your inventory in the app. You can then do a bunch of things in the app, and after the experience I had with my Lamborghini it was a bit more enjoyable repeating the whole thing with this Aston Martin. You get a bunch more free credits for juice, and your car is a lot more powerful than the rival cars that the app races you against so it's a bit one-sided. My irritation with the pay-to-play nature of the app still stands though - after playing for a while you are presented with a choice - wait an hour after which time your "juice" or petrol in other words is replenished so you can carry on racing, accept the free 25 juice credits that Hot Wheels give you with your new car, or eventually crack and spend some real world money to buy as much juice as you want - which has the possibility of becoming very expensive. As an adult all I see here is Hot Wheels inventing an obstacle that I can pay to remove so that I can carry on playing the game. I worry that children might not see things so clearly. Back when I were a lad we used to buy video games and that was that, you played them as long as you want. Nowadays we have micro transactions and maybe everyone else is fine with this, but I'm not happy at all! Anyway... the car itself is nice, its paint colours are nice if a little garish for an Aston Martin, but it's nicely done. As I said in my review of the Lamborghini, I'm not absolutely convinced that the £6.99 this car costs is justified when you can spend something like £25 for 20 standard Hot Wheels cars - especially given that the id app is designed to earn Hot Wheels extra money from you.

I like the small toys, my son does like to play with a car, not as much as his iPad or Android tablet, but this bridges a bit between the two. An interesting way to enhance a game via a physical toy. It is, however, a shame the box is almost entirely non-English. For me whilst I can accept international products, this is a little offputting, and detracts from the product. So collectors who maybe just like the Aston Martin as a collector item, this may well be a no go.

The kids love using them and they work with the track great.

Kurz und gut: Lassen wir das mit "Hot Wheels id, was ist das überhaupt?" überhaupt mal beiseite. Das immer und immer wieder in Rezensionen zu ... äh, ne, Moment. Ich lese da in anderen Mitrezensionen gerade, dass man mit dem Fahrzeug hier ein Fahrzeug in einer Rennspiel-App kauft und überhaupt und sowieso. Äh, also doch etwas Aufklärung nötig, nicht wahr? "Hot Wheels id" ist im Grunde der Versuch, reale Die-Cast-Autos und zugehörige Rennbahnen (ja, echte Rennbahnen) mit Augmented Reality anzureichern und damit den GAP zwischen Handy-spielender Jugend und den Produkten von Hot Wheels zu schließen. Mit "Rennspielen" im Sinne einer Rennspiel-App hat das leider nicht viel zu tun und ich finde, dass man das nicht genug betonen kann, wenn hier anderweitig so viel ... äh ... "Schmarn" erzählt wird. Hm. Was bekommt man hier also für seine ca. 8 Euro? Nun, ein Fahrzeug, das nicht nur sehr gut aussieht, sondern einen auch noch über die gehörige App und entsprechende Bahnen mit dem entsprechenden Input über Höchstgeschwindigkeiten bzw. Rundenzeiten bzw. gefahrene Rundenanzahlen etc. pp. versorgt. Das ist top, wenn man auf solche Dinge steht - und für Leute wie meinen Sohn (10), der mit beiden Beinen zwischen Die-Cast und Smartphone steht und sich mit Produkten wie diesem hier nicht mehr dazwischen entscheiden muss. Im Fazit: Mir gefällt der Aston Martin hier auch so schon gut genug und ich hätte (ohne NFC) dafür auch gut und gerne 5 Euro als realistischen Preis gesehen. Von daher sind die 8 Euro für das Fahrzeug definitiv hoch, aber halbwegs gerechtfertig. Allerdings halte ich "Hot Wheels id" für ein Premium-Produkt wie alle anderen - will heißen: Nötig und ein "Must-Have" ... äh, ist das nicht. Für mich sind das trotzdem 5 Sterne. Gerade bei dem Aston Martin.

I have several Hot Wheels AM One-77s already but never with this packaging or color scheme. It will stay in the packaging for now, but if I happen to get a duplicate, then will be out all the time.
