Definitive Guide to sed: Tutorial and Reference

If you use Linux, want to learn sed, and don't need to deal with multiple languages or different versions of *nix, this book, rather than the O'Reilly book sed & awk , is the way to go. Goldman doesn't get bogged down in all the ins and outs of POSIX but rather focuses on just getting the job done. It is GNU sed only without worrying about other versions of *nix or sed. The information in the O'Reilly book is no doubt useful to hardcore sys-ops but is overkill for Linux hobbyists who who just want to learn sed. Many, many examples. One of the examples may be exactly what you want to do!

This provides a great tutorial for gnu sed, and also POSIX sed. I like it better than the O'Reilly sed/awk books, and I think it's much better than most online tutorials. The book has a praise by the previous maintainer of gnu sed.

This text provides an excellent coverage of GNU sed. I'd also recommend O'Reilly's sed&awk, but whereas that one focuses on POSIX sed, this text covers the GNU version, which is what most people are going to be using. GNU introduces a few new options and instructions that are not in POSIX and this book discusses those as well. Simple examples are provided for every concept discussed.

I have read the awk and sed 2nd edition by arnold robbins and several other books and tutorials. This book is by far the best and most complete reference to sed that is available. This book is definitely worth the purchase.

Like the approach address ing the content. And thorough. But a lot of errors, thus, making the examples not matching description. Suggestions run you own examples instead of reading the examples

This book taught me everything I needed to know about sed. It’s very thorough.

The book used concepts in chapters that were introduced later in the book. It doesn't flow very well at all.
