I have done this several times. Note that it may change the color slightly (a little yellowish), but it makes the finish much more durable. I recommend a satin or semi-gloss if you want a smooth finish. I've used matte before as well, where I wanted to make the surface a little rougher (distressed furniture, or stairs on a ladder). **Q: Can this bbe thinned to get a smooth finish?** A: i do not know, i did not try but if you use a hi quality brush its not too bad .
