Lighthouse Encyclopedia: The Definitive Reference

This encyclopedia isn't so all-around review but it's really interesting.There are little pieces of info about history of lighthouses but it's not so amazing because all the schoolchildren know it from History lessons (at least in Eastern Europe or Russia). The book focused on American, Australian, British and French lighthouses. Cool, it's more then nothing, but for real polymathy there are not enough info about lighthouses of Northern and Eastern Europe (just two or three lighthouses of Scandinavia, nary lighthouses of Polish pr Russian Baltic Sea, nary lighthouses of the Arctic Ocean), lighthouses of Middle East and North Africa (from Turkey - Strait of Istanbul for sample) and Far East (from Russian Far East till Japan, China and all other eastern countries).SO! Notwithstanding anything to the contrary set forth above the book really good!Interesting, hihgly and finely colored, with great many of cool photos.It's really good book to become acquainted with lighthouses!

Excellent overview of American lighthouses and some others from around the world. Shows a plethora of shapes, sizes and architectures.

This book was purchased as a birthday gift for a lighthouse lover. Her b-day is yet to come, but I believe she's going to LOVE it! The different lighthouses were beautifully photographed and the book is informative. I may have to purchase her another one, and get one for myself!

I am a lover of Lighthouses and great photography and this book The Lighthouse Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition: The Definitive Reference by Ray Jones has both, plus lots of History and info about Lighthouses. And Its a nice Coffee Table Book to.

A well presented book and very well printed with lots of photos and good information.However it is spoiled for me by it's major bias to USA lighthouses. The title is "Lighthouse Encyclopedia: The Definitive Reference (Lighthouse Series)" which implies a generally worldwide coverage, which this is most certainly not.According to Lighthouse Directory, there are more than 18,600 lighthouses worldwide. Lighthouse Directory is a website about lighthouses around the world, maintained by mathematician Russ Rowlett and hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Of these the United States has approximately a thousand lights. (I know - the debate about what qualifies as a lighthouse!)Yes, there are lighthouses from around the world covered to some extent, but not in proportion.Be warned, this is a very much USA book (with some exceptional photographs).

5 stars for Amazon's amazingly quick delivery, but only 4 stars for the book. The book is well presented and beautifully illustrated. Most of the content relates to North American lighthouses, and in the section covering World lighthouses, the geography of the British Isles is somewhat sketchy. eg: The Eddystone is said to be west of Cornwall, and the Lizard to be near Plymouth. I suppose on an American scale 50 miles is a minute distance!

If you're a big fan of Lighthouses like me, then you'll love this book. It's jam-packed with tons of information and history, and it's the best Lighthouse book I've come across.
