Is there a way to make it stop when it is down?

Yes..hit the middle button on your remote.

how long is the power cord for motor, can it come across the screen to reach an outlet that may be on the other side of the screen?

From the screen to the control box is about 3 feet, and then about 4 feet from there to the plug.

How far away should the projector be placed?

That all depends on the quality of your projector. I have a Vamvo LED projector as and mine is about 10 feet from the screen.
