desertcart.com Before 1985, when Sammy Hagar became the second frontman for Van Halen, he had a fairly successful career as a solo artist. Unboxed compiles his best songs from the decade before he replaced Diamond Dave. In truth, this is probably the best way to hear Hagar solo because, like David Lee Roth and Joe Walsh, Hagar's individual records were never really strong enough to stand alone. Standout tracks on Unboxed include "Heavy Metal," a murky, futuristic cut recorded for the film of same name, the bluesy, blustery "Three Lock Box," and the anthemic radio cut "I Can't Drive 55." Wer hier nachliest, wird den Red Rocker kennen. Vielleicht als Solokünstler, vielleicht als Van Halen-Frontman nach David Lee Roth, vielleicht als Chickenfoot-Mitglied. Wo er auch das Mikro schwang, war Hagar niemals ein Freund der filigranen Töne, die fetten Westkurven-Refrains sind eher seine Stärke. Dabei mochte er sich mitunter nicht recht entscheiden zwischen radiotauglichem Mainstream-Rock und knackigem, harten Rock`n`Roll. Dieser Umstand lässt die hier vorliegend Sammlung seiner Solo-Hits ein wenig zerrissen erscheinen. Einerseits eher seichtes Chartsfutter, andererseits echte Knaller. Die Knaller? Bitte sehr: Can`t drive 55, Only one way to rock und Heavy Metal. Das macht schon Laune, auch wenn man ein klitzekleines Jucken dort spürt, wo man das musikalische Gewissen vermutet. Denn musikpolitisch korrekt ist das hier nicht, eher so ein bissel prollig. Was macht's?!? Fenster runter, Arm raus, I can't drive fiftyfiiiiive...yeah!

der Red Rocker hängt erschöpft in den Seilen, und musiziert etwas seichtere Töne. Insgesamt hörenswert, aber sicherlich kein Highlight. Bei den kurz vorher verlassenen Van Halen hat er bei 5150, OU812 oder F.U.C.K. deutlicher besser gerockt. Auch sein Marching to Mars oder Ten 13 [+1 Bonus ] sind deutlich besser. Einzig I Can't Drive 55 sticht etwas heraus.
