does this unit require an extra ground wire?

No, it did not require an extra ground wire. I believe it comes with a small packet of dielectric grease, if not, buy a small tube. Be sure to apply about 1/32" to the mounting surface as a heat barrier. I replaced my module several years ago after even Ford Co. couldn't diagnose my problem. It has worked great since.
