Kate Beckinsale returns to death-dealing in the fourth installment of the Underworld saga (she took a break for Part Three, the Underworld: Rise of the Lycans prequel). Still clad in black-leather Goth gear, still capable of absorbing an enormous amount of punishment, Beckinsale's vampiric avenger Selene gets put on ice (literally) as Underworld: Awakening begins, and thaws out 12 years later in her customary foul mood. The scruffy survivors--vampire and werewolf alike--of a societal "cleansing" are still at odds, and a young girl holds the key to… oh, the future of mankind, or whatever. Say this for the feeble plot of this movie: at least it's not insanely complicated with centuries of history. How can it be, with a running time that (accounting for 10 minutes of end credits) lasts about 77 minutes? That's plenty of time for super-slick Swedish directors Mårlind & Stein to stage a nonstop series of fighting scenes, each as meaningless as the last, although one can't deny the effort put in to making lycans disintegrate or creating showers of silver dust. In supporting roles, Stephen Rea and Charles Dance look sheepish about collecting their paychecks. The idea of Selene experiencing feelings is raised, even if Beckinsale mostly goes the robotic route; if you can prove her performance wasn't computer-generated, you deserve some kind of prize. --Robert Horton When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind. Review: Great film - Better in 3D Review: Underworld - Such a good movie!

Excellent
I watched Underworld Awakening with low expectations because I'd heard it had low reviews. I was expecting fun action but didn't know if there would be any story or characterization to go with it. I was extremely disappointed with Rise of the Lycans and felt that story idea was a great story that could've have been told allot more powerfully. So I was concerned about the quality level of Underworld Awakening. I thought it might do a disservice to the original Underworld ethos. I was pleasantly surprised. Underworld Awakening is an engaging and suspenseful action movie from the beginning. It is everything an action movie should be and the action and related suspense is well done. But it is more than just meaningless action. It has a good story to it. The desires and motivations of the characters are well portrayed. There are a number of surprises and plot twists as well. What I'm trying to say is that the action is driven by the motivation, desires and emotions of Selene and the other characters. The movie does move at a frenetic, breakneck pace but there is depth in the story, not just meaningless action. I've seen plenty of meaningless, banal action movies and I detest them so I'm not one who is quick to praise every action movie just because of the "wow" factor. I require more than explosions, spectacular fight scenes and action. I require that there be a story and that there be characterization, that the movie has depth. And good directing is really nice and rather essential too. Don't believe the poor reviews of this movie. Those people simply don't understand it or mistake it for something else. If you liked the first Underworld movie, you'll like this one. If you liked the sequel you'll love this one. I thought the sequel to Underworld was okay and a bit of a letdown in some ways, however still possessing good qualities. But this movie, in my mind, captures the magic of the original movie, albeit in a different way. I think some people are put off by the pace of the movie, that the whole movie takes place in no more than 2 to 3 days. That isn't a problem for me. Bottom line: The story carries the action and makes this movie meaningful, enjoyable and satisfying. If there is a sequel to this one (and the ending of Awakening begs for a sequel) I hope it is a well directed, well scripted movie that the creators take seriously and not just driven by hollywood greed. Excellent movie - Don't believe the poor reviewers - Highly recommended.

Really entertaining flick, but WAY too short! (Blu-Ray)
*Just had to put Blu-Ray in the title as the reviews for DVDs and Blu-Rays seem to be mixed togeter and it can be hard to tell the difference. Also, this is for the 2D version of the film. I don't have a 3D TV (sulk lol), though both versions are on the disc* I rented this out and really enjoyed it. Selene is back and doing what she does best... Ending anyone who gets in her way! Great action with some brilliant speial effects that really shine on Blu-Ray. Rated 18, it's a lot more gory and bloody then the previous films. A lot! The picture is perfect, very gorgeous, especially for a dark toned film. The surround (7.1 DTS HD Master Audio) sound is fantastic. It must be one of the best I've heard. Sounds popping up all over the room, and very loud ones too. I'm very impressed with both picture and audio! This is easily a reference quality film if you're got the right setup. The disc you put into your player has some nice artwork on it. I'm not a fan of plain discs. Also, I like the main menu. Some films you just get something basic like a picture and the choices below. Here you get nice background music and a bunch of brief scenes from the film playing on a loop. There's a nice bunch of special features included: Featurettes Sleene Rises - 12:15 The Cast - 12:34 Resuming the Action - 8:52 Awakening a Franchise, Buding a Brutal New World - 18:55 Building a better Lycan - 10:21 Previsualizaion Sequences Blooper Reel - 3:23 Previews "Heavy Rain" Music Video The only bad point about this flick is that it's only 1hr 18m (35s) long, and at the time I didn't feel like spending £15 on a new release that's so short. Then at the very start of the film there's a recap of the previous films which goes on for almost 1m 30s (27s) - so really in a way you're only getting about 1hr 17m. Which is why I waited for a price drop. For £5 this is my first bargin of 2013.
