Shaving bliss
I have been using this safety razor for about the last two months and can honestly say that it has made a huge improvement to my skin after shaving. I used to suffer quite a lot from ingrowing hairs; neck, chin and cheeks along with some strange 'dead' hairs randomly growing from my face. (previously shaving with one of these 5 blade razors) So I was forever checking my face over for these hairs or ingrowing sections. Since purchasing this razor and using the very good derby blades that come with the package I have not had any problems with my skin what-so-ever. No ingrowing hairs, no razor burns (didn't really suffer with this before hand)and the condition of my skin has also improved. And by this I mean that it is less dry, feels smoother and just appears to have a better 'glow' as I am not stripping out all the moisture along with several layers of skin. I have quite coarse facial hair but I only shave every 2-3 days. So I have been replacing the blades every 2 weeks. I could most probably get more out of them? but I have found that at this point they still shave very well without any excess tug on the skin. But considering that I have just purchased a pack of 100 of these blades from Amazon for less that £9 including delivery. That will give me almost 2 years of shaving blades. So not exactly wasteful!! but ensuring I get consistent great shaves. The razor itself is fantastic. Easy to change blades and clean with a great weight on it. You really just need to hold it near the bottom of the handle and let it glide across your face. No need to put any excessive pressure to drag it through your hair as this could lead you to cut and nick yourself a lot. (Thankfully I did okay on my learning curve, first couple of times you might but then it becomes much more second nature. It is a lot smaller than you imagine it would be..... Not a long handle but again you don't need a long handle as you are not holding and using this as you would have done previously with a disposable multiblade razor. Gently hold the handle and let the natural weight and sharpness of the blade give you a great shave. I would also recommend brush and shaving dish (I have found the shaving dish and creme to be much better to shave with as it dries out less on your skin. Maybe a little old fashioned as such! But you know what..... It provides such a great shave that those extra couple of minutes it takes really does make it all the worthwhile and I do actually like shaving again. Believe me, one very good single blade is giving me a much better shave that 5 blades dragging my skin behind a 'protection' bar. And this fantastic safety razor is a great product a a great price. Great Razor, fantastic shave and no more in-growing facial hairs to deal with. I would highly recommend this product for your shaving pleasure.

Edwin Jagger De89bl Review!
As someone who is new to the traditional way of shaving i struggled for a good few days to research every aspect from brushes, creams, soaps, razors and blades. I finally settled on this razor as it was rated highly by the vast majority of people on here with the added bonus that it came with 5 derby extra blades to start you off. The quality of this product is simply stunning, with the chrome finish being as good as you're every going to see on any object, everything lines up correctly and fits together perfectly... please note if you didn't already know that this is a three piece razor and the handle part simply unscrews from the top. Having received it yesterday i had my first shave with it this morning using one of the enclosed derby extra blades and are very please to report how good a shave it really is. Having been use to multi-blade cartridge razors in the past which would quickly dull and tug on hair and generally be unpleasant to use, with this i had no issues. Hair simply glided off in one smooth stroke and the safety bar is fixed in a decent position meaning cutting yourself is highly unlikely unless you do something reckless or try to shave to quickly. Small strokes are best i found and the included derby extra blades appear to be very sharp yet forgiving (i will place an update at the bottom regarding how many shaves the blade lasts). As for cleaning it is very straight forward, simply rinse under the tap and when you've finished then undo the razor and pat everything dry with some toilet roll to keep everything clean. I cannot state how well made this razor is and how good it feels with it being the right weight and the handle is spot on length wise. The shaving cream i bought at the same time as this razor is Proraso Shaving Cream Tube (150ml) ... which i can fully recommend to you as it cools your skin and provides a nice slick shave, also smells pretty good too. As for the razor... PROS: Gives a very close yet comfortable shave, hardly any irritation compared to cartridge razors, no tugging on hair, VERY WELL MADE IN ENGLAND (so supports jobs here at home), chrome finish is as good as I've ever seen!! CONS: As it's a three piece razor it is slightly more hassle putting it together than a two piece razor but i'm just nit picking! VERDICT: After watching YouTube videos and numerous reviews it became clear very quickly that this was one of the top "double edge" safety razors on the market. It looks great and gives a far better shave than any cartridge razor I've used although the blades play some part in that... i intend to try other blades when the 5 included run out, but for now i couldn't be happier with these derby extra blades which as i said earlier are sharp yet forgiving on your skin. The razor comes well wrapped with the blades inside a small cardboard box. As for the razor and the whole package i can FULLY RECOMMEND it to you. I will be more than happy to answer questions about this product so leave a comment and i'll get back to you a.s.a.p! UPDATE: The included blades (Derby Extra DE blades) lasted around 5 shaves for me before i had issues with it tugging hair

The future - old school
After many, many years of shaving with a multi-blade cartridge razor and aerosol foam (I have tried all versions Gillette, King of shaves, Wilkinson Sword etc etc etc) I decided to take the plunge into the world of DE shaving. Why? Well, I have never truly had a satisfactory `barber style' shave from a cartridge razor, even though they are quick to use, great for when you are half asleep and actually quite hard to cut yourself with!. They always seemed to give me blind spots caused by blocked pores and ingrowing hairs. I thought that this was just my odd face until doing a little research following the eruption of the mother of all spots on my chin (so large that the ladies in my office gave it a name and insisted that it had its own gravitational pull) and discovered that many men claim that using a DE razor is the answer. Couple that with my frugal nature (how much are we paying for cartridge blades!!!!) and the case for a DE razor was made. As usual, I did my research and took the plunge with the Edwin Jagger DE89. Using the free Derby blades I approached the mirror, blade in hand with trepidation. First shave OK, second shave better and so on until shave 4. On day 4 I think I became over confident and tried to shave like I did with a Mach 3. BIG mistake. It was like Sweeny Todd had had opened up a concession in my bathroom. So bad in fact that I nearly went back to my old ways. Glad I didn't though. A re-analysis of my technique and a new blade and I was away and running again. 2 weeks in, I have had the best 4 shaves in a row that I have ever had. And can't recommend this razor enough. Its hard learning to shave again after many many years, but fun too. The razor requires no pressure at all to cut and actually seems (after two weeks) to be giving my skin the chance to heal blemishes without adding new ones. I think that within a week or so, I may actually have nice skin at the rate that this is going. The shave is smooth and feels great whilst shaving and afterwards too. Its is obviously a closer cut as it is lasting longer in the day and it makes a very manly `rasping' noise in the morning - sets you up for the day and makes me want to find a tree to cut down or a wild animal to wrestle! Cost wise, this could also be a good investment. Blades are lasting for 5 days with replacement Derby blades (popular, scorned by some `experts' but work for me to far) costing 10p per blade - far cheaper than a multi blade version and is less waste to throw away at the end of the life of each cartridge. Time wise, shaving like my granddad takes a few minutes longer each morning. But in reality, a few minutes longer each day making sure that your face looks better isn't such a big time investment. So in summary ... go for it boys! It won't change your life drastically, but it feels great, saves money and is better for the environment.

Free yourself from the tyranny of awful shaving!
**** Lengthy and possibly off topic review ahead! **** So to start with let me just explain my credentials, my modus tonde as it were (ahem).I have been shaving for the last 18 years (am 34) and I started on Mach 3's with Gillette gel. I have always had sensitive skin and when I say sensitive... well let me elaborate: My skin burns even in Scottish weather, I get red from my own sweat and from any heat over room temperature. If I used any cheap razor or disposable it was like a bloodbath, electrics made me come out in a rash and depending on the balm I used my skin would either get too dry or too greasy (I suffer from a 3 hour shave sheen). So the upshot of this is that I have tried all sorts of foams and creams and gunk on my face but never made the plunge into changing up the main shave weapon, the razor. I bought this razor as it has great reviews all over and I like to buy British! The quality is fine and I have not had any trouble with slips or with the size. The quality is great and it has a nice weight to it, no need to push on the face. I bought Astra blades and Wilkinson sword blades along with the included Darby blades as they are said to be less aggressive on the face. I find the Astra to be more aggressive then the Darby but the Wilkinson sword gave the best close shave/irritation ratio. Whatever you do, do not go for a feather blade or any other aggressive blade at first, try a range of less aggressive blades so your skin can get used to shaving this way as There Will Be Blood. On the subject of blood, make sure you get some sort of styptic pencil or Alum block as you just whet and rub the block over your face and it stops bleeding and helps with redness, be prepared for some man-sting though. This stuff also helps with having greasy skin and zits and I am finding that it is helping my T zone and the greasy bits on the side of my nose... I read the reviews and got myself some Proraso shaving cream for sensitive skin, I wanted to go for a good balance of price/quality as spending 20 pounds on some shave cream is not a good long term strategy. The Proraso shave cream is like liquid silk and makes a good thick lather like in a 50's barber shop. I use it with a cheap badger brush from the Shaving Shack and a wooden bowl, which I dry out after every use. I found the cream lubricated my face well and had a good scent and consistency. I had to use very little to get the amount of lather I wanted to perform the standard 3 pass shave. I shave after coming out of a hot shower, I also rub a little conditioner on my bristles in the shower to soften them up. I get the shaving water hot and leave the brush in the water for a few minutes so it absorbs water into the Badger hair. I then mix my lather and apply in a circular motion until covered. I shave using very little pressure, bearing in mind that on a mechanical level you are scraping a (literally) razor sharp slither of metal across your face for 10 minutes. After I have gone over all the difficult areas a couple more times I rinse in the warm water then whet and rub the alum block (Osma) over my whole face and leave on for a few minutes whilst I clean off and dry my razor, bowl and brush. I then rinse the alum off with cold water and apply Proraso Shaving Cream for sensitive skin (white bottle). I like the scent and the consistency in this cream and it absorbs into the skin without being greasy. The cream also contains witch hazel - an anti stringent and all round nice thing for razor scraped skin. On a side note, I find the Proraso cream also goes nicely with my Luna Rosa Extreme and my Elvis Jesus aftershave, but that is a personal preference. So in summation, yes I would recommend this. If you are new to DE shaving and want a well priced, well made, mantastic razor then you cannot go far wrong with this product.

Good, but may require adjustment
Having heard a lot of good things about the traditional double-edged razor, I purchased this item around a week ago. At first I was impressed: the item has a good weight to it, and a lovely chrome finish. When I started shaving with it, however, I realised that I wasn't going to get a decent shave with it, but I blamed myself, because I knew it takes time to learn how to use a double-edged razor effectively. It quickly because apparent that the fault wasn't mine, however - the angle this razor holds the blade at is far too close to the guard to get an effective shave out of it. I'm not sure if this is a general problem or just one with my particular product. A few days later, I decided to adjust the razor by adding a washer on the inside between the guard and the blade. Since then, this razor has been like a dream, giving me incredible shaves with very little risk of razor burn or nicking myself. It is far more tactile and easy-to-manipulate than a plastic razor, and I am now entirely satisfied with it. I'm not sure if this need for adjustment was down to the fact I have very coarse hair, or the particular product, or whether it affects all razors of this line, but I thought it bore mentioning regardless.

Very Nice Indeed.
I recently got a plasticy DE Wilkinson Sword safety razor to try out old school shaving, while it worked very well for the price (cheap), its not a patch on this superb razor. The plastic one worked very well with the WS blades that came with it, but i tried a Derby blade in it and it was horrible... I put the exact same Derby blade i tried in the plastic one in this one and the difference really is night and day, smoothest shave i have had with DE shaving 'ever'. When i first picked this razor up it looked the business, all shiny and chrome, looked class, has a nice weight to it, and its smooth, which doesn't really get slippy, unless you get soap all over the handle i suppose. On my first pass, with the grain, i wasn't overly impressed, in fact i felt a bit disappointed like it hadn't removed much, so i went with the second pass, across the grain, it looked much better and i would say more than passable for a daily shave, lathered up one last time and went against the grain... WOW is all i can say, no real irritation, (maybe a little from the shave the day before which had left me a little sore)... I can't wait till my next shave, where i wont be sore from the day before. This thing gave me one of the best shaves i have had in a while, and i can highly recommend getting this. You have to work on the angle of holding the blade, it feels a little different to the other i used, like a steeper angle. My advice is to let the razor do the work, don't press it onto you face, and try 2 or 3 passes. I really cant get over the difference a razor (holder) makes with the same blade... truly amazing, honestly. I think i have found my one and only razor, i don't need to look any further than this. Forget the really cheapy things, just get this or something like this and you wont look back... then again its probably worth trying cheap first to find out what a good and bad shave really is.

What was once a chore, is now a pleasure
I don't consider myself to be particularly tight with money by any means, but in recent years I have become increasingly irritated at the price of 'cartridge' razor blades manufactured by the leading brands. I won't name them - we all know who they are, but one year the blades will have three cutting edges, the next year four, and I believe we may now be up to five, with lubricating strips and even 'oscillation' if you really want it, though I've absolutely no idea why anyone would need five blades (or indeed, oscillation) in order to achieve a clean, close shave. For me, these blades are now right up there with ink jet cartridges, spectacles and greetings cards as one of this country's great rip offs. Made for pennies, sold for whatever the customer will stand. Well I've decided to stand it no more. So, rather than pay around £15 for four blades, I began to look for alternatives. It was at this point that I stumbled (stubbled?) across Double Edge (DE) razors, badger brushes and tubs of shaving cream and soap. In short, exactly the tools I remember my Father using to shave. Most of the reviews were highly positive - not only for the products on offer, but for the overall shaving experience. I settled on the Edwin Jagger De89bl, as I didn't want to skimp on something that I planned to use for many years, and was hugely impressed with the number of five star reviews on Amazon. To complete my set, I also ordered a badger hair brush and some Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender Shaving Cream - also from Amazon. The razor is a thing of real beauty. Gleaming chrome, slightly smaller than I'd imagined, but with a highly pleasing weight. It comes with a pack of five Derby blades, so I unscrewed the razor, slipped the new blade into place and looked forward to the first 'DE shave' of my life. The process of changing a blade takes only seconds. Even though the razor is clearly state-of-the-art and manufactured to the highest standards, the whole process still feels very traditional. It's fair to say that the shave takes a bit longer than using a cartridge-based razor, but I would say only by three or four minutes. Working the lavender shaving soap into my beard with the badger brush was an absolute pleasure, not least because of the wonderful smell from the soap (having used aerosols for years, I now realise just how artificial they smell). So, here we are. The moment of truth. I have fairly sensitive skin, so my one real concern was whether I would come out of this looking like an extra from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I needn't have worried. The De89bl glided over my face like Jane Torvill on ice. I took my time, using short strokes and very little pressure and there was absolutely no razor burn. One major difference between a DE razor and the cartridge system razors, is that the DE has a fixed head, so doesn't automatically flex when you run it under your jaw or chin. This is simply a matter of technique and requires you to angle the DE razor accordingly. Like anything else, you soon pick it up and working back against the grain is also no problem. A wonderfully clean shave leaving my skin smelling faintly of lavender using blades that really do cost pennies. Obviously, there's the initial cost of the razor and accessories, but the Edwin Jagger De89bl is so beautifully made, that I have no doubt it will last me many years to come and that my money will be recouped in no time. It's funny how the relatively small things in life can make you feel happy and my purchase has done exactly that. I actually find myself looking forward to my next shave - not something I can honestly say I've ever done in the past. Call me old-fashioned if you want, but I believe I've found the way forward. Go on, treat yourself.

Great double edge razor for a beginner like me :)
Want to preface this review with saying that this is my first double edge razor. I love the design of this razor. I also like that it is a chrome finish which looks and feels very nice. It is heavy enough by where there is enough weight to make it feel strong and study. The plates is easy to remove from the handle all you have to do is unscrew the handle using your hands. Easy to screw back on also. The grip on this also isn’t too bad however there is also another mulberry similar to this which has lines through the handle and that helps to give better grip. Just something you should take into consideration. So far I have to say it’s way better than using a cartridge razor. I tend to use this with a asta platinum blade and prosaso white shaving cream. After using make remove the plate and rinse since there could be hair stuck in-between the two plates and the blade.
