I sleep in an air conditioned room. Will this help with the dry air?

It might. But you'd be dealing with 2 totally opposing machines; the vaporizer/steamer, which is designed to add humidity; and the a/c unit, which removes humidity. I would think that unless you adjust the a/c to a higher temp (so it doesn't run as often), it will ultimately prevail in the humidity war.

Auto shut off? How long will it run when full?

Depends upon the amount of minerals in water. I have well water through a carbon filter and it runs between 8 and 10 hours. I started buying water out of the machine in the local grocery store and it runs better than 24 hours. But less humidity.

Is it UL approved? Also does the top hook on so it can't be pulled off by mistake?

Should be approved. Top hook is locked when it adjust. Working nicely With Warm steam vapor.I enjoy it every night.
