What is the distance between the light and the plate? I'm afraid it maybe doesn't fit the large birds...

It is maybe six or 7 inches. But truly, this is the best birdfeeder I’ve had. I bought two of them. Cardinals absolutely love it, they perch on the edge all the time. And at night it is a beautiful solar light. The customer service on this company is excellent. I highly recommend it.!

Anyone else have problems getting the solar rod into the other piece to be tightened?

Yes! I ordered two for Christmas gifts and my father in law had to really push the pieces together hard to get them to stay. Once he did that, they were perfect.

does it come with the waterproof plugs so can be used with water
