I'm not sure the measurement that you are looking for. When you unscrew the bolt, the opening is 5/8-inch. RICH

Jaw opining is 3/4 inch or a hair less. The link is 1/2 inch thick.

In my opinion it would be as strong as the strap. But I have not tried it, so it is just a guess.
