For me the weapons automatically turned to gold, it doesn't tell you though. You can tell because it becomes easier to get kills.

Do you have to download or does it install from the disk?

I bought the PS3 video game disk which downloads to your PS3 system but you need the disk in the system every time you play the game.I don't know what you mean by download it.
