Q: How do I attach these to studs? I can’t get them open

The knurled end is a threaded nut. Turn them all the way out and push it inward to open the buckle. The non-openable end is for the sling strap which needs to pass through and attach back to the strap itself.

Q: Are these solid brass?

These are steel with an antique brass finish. They are not solid brass.
