Good solid product - simplifies replacing HD with SSD
This is a very nice product indeed. Well made and well finished. Simplicity itself to use. I used it to replace a failing 3.5" HDD in my iMac with an SSD. Couldn't have been easier (well except for delving into the byzantine innards of the iMac). I think it's well worth paying a little extra for this item rather than the cheaper 2.5" to 3.5" plastic caddies. The form factor precisely matches a standard 3.5" drive, all the holes connectors are in precisely the right place. Easy-peezy and highly recommended.

Icy Dock is the number one dock for SSD Drive.
This is an outstanding enclosure for SSD drive. Setting it up takes less than 30 seconds. Very well made and is worth every penny. If you want a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor, this item should be your first choice. Do not put off by the price as it is an excellent piece of kit. Thank you Amazon for your packaging, fast delivery and the best price.

I am satisfied with this product since it definitely has a solid aluminium body I still have the same complaint about this MB982SP-1S 2.5"/3.5" converter like the other one (MB382SP-3B). They don't always slide in, or fit it as easily as I wanted into the MB171SP-B 5.25" bay caddy (all these model codes are Icy Dock products) But since the original purpose for them is for enterprise usage in server rooms I guess and not for multiple operating system HDD/SSD booting (what I use these 2.5"/3.5" converters for), I won't complain anymore than this because that wouldn't be fair Conclusion: I especially like the fact that it's easier to just put in the SSD after simply pushing a button (the one on this MB982SP-1S) and close on it rather than fitting screws to the SSD, or more precisely, it's even more efficient with this design. Well done Icy Dock, very innovative I'm looking to buy more in the future, as I buy more SSDs

Solid and worth the extra price
I finally decided to use an ssd in my old Mac Pro After doing some research I decided to go with this product. It arrived promptly and after opening the package I was surprised to see how easily it was to just slot the ssd into the converter No screws or fiddling with anything, press a release button pop in and snap shut The screw holes were also in exactly in the right place and the array slid smoothly back into the Mac Pro Extremely pleased and if I get another ssd I will definitely be purchasing this item again

Perfect. I was very disappointed with the very poor ...
Perfect. I was very disappointed with the very poor plastic version, also made by Icy Dock. So I was prepared to pay more, but had doubts about that company. I am now completely reassured that Icy Dock can make great products. This adapter is easy to use. There is a button to open it smoothly, so no prying or sliding or pushing is necessary. The SDD I use it for (an Intel) got into place perfectly well. The contacts get connected automatically as you close the lid (which results in a lever action, pushing the SSD against the connector with perfect alignment). There is also a sheet of transparent plastic that sits under the SSD, with a tab that you can grab to pull the drive out easily. It looks a bit expensive considering what goes into it. But it does the job perfectly, and fulfills a need that is not easy to meet. So that's five stars from this happy customer. Mine is used in a Mac Pro 3,1, where it fits impeccably.

Perfect for the job
I bought this to fit an SSD into a fullsize desktop, the enclosure is well designed and when closed is exactly the same size as a standard 3.4" drive and has the same mount points. While not the cheapest solution it is solidly built and feels like a quality item. I don't regret buying this instead of one of the cheaper rail type adapters.

Just what I needed
I've been looking for an adapter for a while to mount SSD's into the drive bays of my servers at home but they all presented the SATA connection in the wrong place to match a 3.5" drive bay. This one works a treat. Pity it ain't cheaper, but I can see why it costs what it does, it's very solid and well made.

Icy Dock MB982SP-1S
Why is it so hard to make an SSD converter the same size as a Hard Drive? September 2016. Bought an Icy Dock MB982SP-1S 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch full metal HDD and SSD converter. Solidly built alright, just NOT the same size as a standard hard drive. I was hoping to use the Icy Dock MB982SP-1S to convert a 2.5 inch SSD to the standard 3.5 inch HDD form factor, using either of the two mobile rack/caddy units installed in my PC. The two mobile racks are: An Icybox IB-158SK-B trayless mobile rack, and a Startech 5.25" trayless hot swap mobile rack. I have a standard Western Digital Red (1 TB) 3.5 inch HDD, which is a close, but good fit when inserted into either of these mobile racks. Problem was, the Icy Dock MB982SP-1S would not fit into either caddy. I measured the Icy Dock MB982SP-1S against the Western Digital Red, using a digital caliper (also bought from Amazon). The Icy Dock MB982SP-1S is 1.5 mm longer (147.35mm to the WD 145.83mm), and about 0.5 mm higher and wider than the Western Digital HDD. NOT an exact match in size. This difference may not sound much, but the Icy Dock will not fit into the Icybox IB-158SK-B without forcing it in (too wide and too high). It will go into the Startech mobile rack, but the Startech door will then not close without forcing it shut (this time too long). I repeat, why is it so hard to make an SSD converter the exact same size as a HDD? The other reviews indicate it works well if the correct rack/ caddy can be found, so three out of five stars seems about right. I am returning mine.

What can I say? Icy Dock products are of the highest possible quality (at least the ones I've used are), and have served me very well for at least 12+ years! This tray works flawlessly with the internal dock allowing me to swap out HDDs at will. At first I installed the dock so that I could remove the HDD to throw it in a fireproof safe, but as time evolved it became less about that, and more about swapping out drives for using different OSs, and/or drive testing. Today, with VMs I don't really need it for that so much any longer, but I still like to keep different OSs on different drives, especially for backup purposes. Another great use case for these docs is for keeping different auto-makers reflash software on separate drives in order to swap out whatever drive in needed to reflash the specific vehicle being serviced/repaired, as the software from different OEM doesn't always play nice together. Keeping each OE's software on a separate drive in a separate tray makes things a LOT easier!
