You can stop the timing device and bring it back to zeros or no time. As for the clock portion it does not turn off. For my purposes the watch is not very functional. I give them to cross country or track runners to time themselves on workouts. Because of the location of the "mode" button kids easily hit it and then even though they can get back to timing it messes them up. One was broken on arrival. i replaced the battery, but it was still dead. Worse though, is ALL of them have been randomly beeping nonstop. There is no total shutoff button, so I am sure the batteries in these will last a VERY short time. When you do replace the batteries, the whole insides and buttons completely fall apart and you have to tediously reassemble everything.
