I like the digtal voltmeter for precisely setting the voltage and the precise settability. I purchased this unit to boost the output voltage of some of the battery powered power stations that typically output 110V AC.

The first two months I owned it was off-gassing paint fumes or something so nasty that I had to leave it in the garage. After that I was able to use it. Third time hooked it up to a test load that wasn't drawing much current, but the wiper or whatever inside started sparking and shorting out. It blew a fuse. I don't plan on using it again. A total waste of money. I'd return it but of course it's out of warranty and past the return period.

Really nice Variac, well made and very accurate.

I'm using this Variac Transformer TDGC2-2D to reduce my incoming utility voltage to a high end audio system...works very well! By reducing the line voltage by 2 volts, my sensitive Class-D power amps "Over-Voltage Protection Circuit" does not exceed its safe limit of operation!The unit makes No noise and No hum (audibly or electronically)...deadly quiet while doing its job! Surprisingly, it also runs cool, just a couple degrees over room ambient temp! Overall, the sonics of my stereo system remain Outstanding!! Only negative (and not by much) is that the large top adjustment knob and reference setting scale are off (dial @105V to get 120V output), but the output LCD viewable screen reading is within .5 of a volt accurate with my Fluke multi-meter!

I finally decided to upgrade my small little 5a variac to a big 20a and decided on this unit based on the reviews. I used it for 8 months and I basically had to leave it on 24/7 to prevent the fuse from blowing. If I accidentally turned it off, I needed to turn on the power switch super slow (presumably to prevent a ton of inrush) and it would usually blow anyway. When it did work, the meter was actually pretty accurate and I did get a lot of use out of it. I'm an electrical engineer so I even took it apart to see what could be causing the issue and it must be an intermittent short in the windings. I finally replaced it today and I can breathe knowing I have a normal variac again. The meter isn't as accurate, but I can turn it on and off without worrying about the fuse blowing.

Well made. Used for restoring old radios. Allows powering up with lower voltage to avoid damaging old components.

After working with my new variac for a few days I discovered that my test circuit was energized with the variac switch turned off. I opened it up to discover that 115V hot from its power cord is wired to the neutral of the outlet built into the variac. It appears the power cable was incorrectly made, as the Blue wire is going to the hot prong on the cable when it should be neutral. This means that the outlet on the Variac is energized when the power switch is turned off, so be very careful.

Purchased for testing electric motors and so forth, a good addition to a mechanics shop.
