Refrigmatic MEGA Electronic Surge Protector for Big Refrigerators

This device passes the first surge through to your appliance and then disconnects if the voltage stays out of bounds. It is designed for power outages, not surges. When the power is restored, there is usually a big surge and because this device disconnects your appliance for an additional period of time after power is restored, that surge will not make it through. However, small transient surges will be passed through and they can be very damaging over time. You need an actual surge suppressor in addition to this device. A surge suppressor will have a rating in several thousand joules, which is the amount of surges that it can suppress before it stops suppressing and requires replacement. Note that this device has no such rating, because it doesn't suppress transient surges like a surge suppressor does. That's why this device is called a surge "protector."

Bought this to protect new fridge after low voltage fried other one. It works lost freezer fridge no problems. Have this on all appliances now

After a recent power outage, the sealed compressor in my 3 year old $2000 Made in Michigan French door refrigerator died. We bought a $250 college dorm refrigerator/freezer and lost only ~$200 in food while we waited 3 weeks for the warranty repair. This device plugs into the socket behind the refrigerator and the refrigerator plugs into it. What is my point?: I believe this surge protector with the delayed restart (key functionality) could have saved me $450. If you have a modern refrigerator/freezer, this is great protection and value.

The Refrigmatic MEGA is an essential item for those of us who have a lot of power interruptions. I really like the delay function. Within an hour after installation, we had another of those power glitches where the power goes off momentarily and then comes back on a second or two later. The delay function worked exactly as advertised. However, as noted in another review, this is not a true (UL 1449 certified) surge protection device. I layered a 1449 surge protector behind the Refrigmatic MEGA and now I have complete protection for a reasonable price. Why am I so picky? When one considers that modern refrigerators cost from $2000 to infinity :), and the control boards are essentially single-board computers that can cost as much as an average desktop computer, spending $50-$60 to protect them is a no-brainer. Not to mention the value ($$$ in my case) of the food that might be lost if the fridge is damaged by a power anomaly. Get one now. I also recommend the Tripplite surge protectors as a cost-effective layered power protection solution. I use their Isobar and Isoblock products in line with the Refrigmatic MEGA, but anything from a quality manufacturer with a 1000-joule or higher rating will give you adequate protection. Remember, more joules = better surge protection. Stay away from cheap power strips.

This is a great product that I am using to protect my garage freezer. So far it’s working fine and it seems like a good idea for me because we have power outages and surges often and this is cheap insurance for peace of mind. This seller was easy to deal with.
