I'm trying to figure out if this works to seal IN any bedbugs that survive treatment, or is only recommended to protect an uninfested mattress

In the case of bedbug treatment the user bthwaithe answered this question above. Let me tell you the REAL truth. That user is 10000% CORRECT in the entire answer. All of the steps mentioned if you have bedbugs must be followed to the letter; and one addition is to make your bed an island; meaning that your bed with casement on should NOT touch a wall. If the bugs are in fact active in your domicile, having your bed touching a wall just gives those little Ba....ds a highway to your hands and feet; they can crawl walls with great ease. You can employ either measure when it comes to sealing in or keeping out those parasites. The casements both box spring and mattress must fit as snug as possible. Bedbugs are known to slip between 2 sheets of paper to hide so any areas that provide shelter; like extra casing that is folded over. Unlike cockroaches with constant and through cleaning and precautionary measures you CAN keep the out and if unlucky enough to have them, end the unwelcome visitors.

I just received this and notice it's made of terry cloth. Does the terry cloth get hot? Seems like an odd choice of material for a mattress encasement

It is an odd material - look at the reviews that mention mold buildup on the terry cloth. Yuck!
