Metric Pattern Cutting for Women's Wear provides a straightforward introduction to the principles of form pattern cutting for garments to fit the body shape, and flat pattern cutting for casual garments and jersey wear. This sixth edition remains true to the original concept: it offers a range of good basic blocks, an introduction to the basic principles of pattern cutting and examples of their application into garments. Fully revised and updated to include a brand new and improved layout, up-to-date skirt and trouser blocks that reflect the changes in body sizing, along with updates to the computer-aided design section and certain blocks, illustrations and diagrams. This best-selling textbook still remains the essential purchase for students and beginners looking to understand pattern cutting and building confidence to develop their own pattern cutting style.

A foundation book we should all have
This book is terrific. I am a confident beginner and I have drafted three patterns from it. I always make mocks and then adjust. I use fitting and pattern alterations by Judith rasband to make adjustments based on my body type. I think thatโs what some of the reviews are complaining about. These are industry patterns, they will help you draft your first blocks and while the book provides alteration methods itโs not great on that bit so youโll need to self draft changes or use another guide to do that. Our bodies are all different, no flat pattern is going to fit perfectly unless you adjust it to your specific measurements and weird eccentricities. A total beginner can do this. Donโt be afraid, just be patient. Fantastic book, Iโm super glad I bought it.

No wonder clothes don't fit me!
I thought that converting from inches to centimeters would be annoying, but I quickly found that centimeters are much nicer to work with: more precise, easier to read on a ruler, and easier math. Then I compared my first draft of my Aldrich sleeve sloper to my Suzy Furrer and Mood Fabrics drafts, and noticed huge variations between my body shape and Industry Standards.Suzy is great with a lot of attention to detail, but her experience seems to rely heavily on Industry Standards and dress forms.Mood Fabrics is great at simplifying drafting, but my result was way off from being useful for my bodice sloper. My neck is small, shoulders narrow, back wide, upper torso quite cylindrical, hips wide, very long slim arms and legs... so many adjustments to make in commercial patterns. During my first 8 hours with this book, I feel a surge of optimism that I will make clothes that I love. My Aldrich sleeve sloper required more geometry and measurements than Suzy or Mood, and my body quirks need that.I love Aldrich's practice of drafting a sleeve sloper on top of a copy of the corresponding bodice sloper. Easy reference to the bodice, and so sensible when they are so closely related!

Love this book!!! Definitely beginner friendly.
This is an awesome book that helps you understand pattern making and how to adapt many styles from the pattern blocks that the author helps you to create. Its literally step by step. It does require some patience...well for me it did because I always buy my patterns and had rarely tried to draft them. This gets 10 thumbs up for me. One thing to note, there is a good amount of ease when I drew up the pattern on muslin I added no seam allowance to the actual pattern but experimented with a fourth of an inch and I liked how it first me. I used the low waste production block for the skirt and pants as well as the close fitting bodice block this far.

GREAT text book for learning to pattern!
Iโve been struggling to teach myself to pattern my own clothes, Iโve been sewing all my life (in my 60โs) using boughtโn patterns, and have ALWAYS struggled to fit them to myself, but this book is a game changer!Of late Iโve tried using utube, and sewing sites to teach myself to how to make a sloper or pattern blocks and seem to just ended up frustrated and unproductive trying to use all the math formulaeโs these utubers tell you to use to get the measurements they use โฆThis little text book is designed for students, and teaches you in a very structured way how to measure yourself, and make pattern โslopersโ to fit you!It is in metric, so you can just turn your tape measure over and read it in centimeters! :)It is unbelievably informative, easy to understand with hundreds of pictures and examples of each of the required challenges to fit a pattern to your own body. There are other books in this series from the same author, and I will be ordering these as well.GREAT buy for any home sewer, or even experienced ones reminding them how to pattern.
