Since the escs output 5v and plug into the apm and receiver is this not enough and the reason the pm is needed?

The power module is optional (bit highly recommended). It allows you to power the APM, as well as monitor battery voltage and current usage. You could feed the 5v from the ESC to the servo rail to power as well I think (and most do as a matter of redundancy). However a filtering capacitor and voltage limiting diode may be required (they were with my Pixhawk).I use one of these power modules for my 6S batts, and keep a spare power module on hand. They're cheap, so why not.over 20 flight hours logged so far and no issues with this power module.

How is this holding up for everyone? Didnt burn anyobes FC up?

One didnt work at all, just fell apart while installing, second one no issues so far.
