Escape From Alcatraz (BD)TRUE STORY. REAL LOCATION. GENUINE CLINT. Whether acting or directing, Academy Award® winner Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino) always manages to make it gritty and keep it real. And it doesn’t get more real than this fact-driven thriller starring Eastwood as Frank Morris, the cunning bank robber who masterminded the only successful escape from Alcatraz’s infamous maximum security prison. In 29 years, the seemingly impenetrable federal penitentiary, which housed Al Capone and “Birdman” Robert Stroud, was only broken once — by three men who were never heard from again. Filmed on location at Alcatraz and directed by Clint’s frequent collaborator Don Siegel (Dirty Harry), this tough, taut reenactment of the true story has all the intense character study and sheer power that mark Eastwood’s finest work.]]> Review: One of the most interesting movies out there - I really like this film. Personally I think while the movie is based on a true story, it's somewhat fictional portrayal of an actual event. Ultimately, I don't think anyone know really what went through the minds of the escapees but this movie does a great job at building up the crew that ultimately made the escape. The Alcatraz escape is probably one of the greatest mysteries of our time as their bodies were never found and no trace of them ever came up. By now they would surely have passed away. The oldest escapee Frank West, that Clint Eastwood plays, was born in 1926 putting his age at 94 (he was born in September) at the time of this review. It's very well possible that he's still alive but I would imagine he'd need assisted living by now and surely the facility would find out that they're dealing with Frank West, one of the escapees. With that said, the film does a very good job at the elaborate escape attempt. Clint Eastwood character, Frank Morris, one day discovers the salty corrosive nature of the sea softens the metal and building material in his cell. So throughout the film Frank discovers way to dig out of his cell and conceal the work. He relays what to do to other cellmates who are in on the escape attempt. The film has a story of the harsh prison life, living with other cellmates and the realities of an unfair system that continues to punish people well beyond their redemption. But the core of the movie, about the escape is rather interesting. The prison has everything they need to escape, but the prisoners, especially Frank, is able to improvise with the equipment they have by doing research. He's reading popular mechanics and other technical books that explains how to do things like build rafts, make drill bits, etc and Frank is able to understand all that and be able to use that skill during his escape. The most elaborate is the fake head that he used to make it appear like he's sleeping in his bunk until daylight exposes the dummy. Overall the movie is very interesting. However, I would be hesitant to say it is entirely true in how they improvised and figured out everything. I think most of it was probably just Johnny on the spot situation where they wanted to escape and tried any way they could think of. I would think, given the technical expertise of research, that Frank would have also thought about the temperature along with his crafting of the raft. I think Frank read it but didn't really understood the dangers beyond simply building an improvised boat that he read about in a magazine. I also find the movie's take to be the most accurate portrayal of the entire escape. Every film I seen always talk about whether the individuals could survive the swim from Alcatraz to the San Francisco mainland. In this film, it seems to be the best case on the technical aspect of it where the escapees applied what they learned to make the escape. A great movie to watch. It is a good film and probably one of the better "prison" movies out there. It's on par with Shawshank Redemption and it doesn't get too violent or bad for the entire family to watch. Review: Escape From Alcatraz (Movie) - A true classic! The story is gripping and Clint Eastwood’s performance is excellent. A must-watch for movie lovers.

One of the Most Famous Prisons Ever.
Escape from Alcatraz is another famous Clint Eastwood movie. I decided to rent this on Prime and I wanted to watch this from beginning to end for the first time ever. I would always get into the middle or will be watching it and have to do something. I loved this movie and the acting is excellent. If you haven't seen this film, it's a must see.

On 4k for the first time.
This version of Escape from Alcatraz is the best one so far that's been released. Much better then previous releases. The sound and picture is much improvement then Blu-ray or dvd. Some extras on this 4k as well theatrical trailer and some interviews from the cast unfortunately no interview from Clint Eastwood. But still worth getting. Right now this best version of film so far.

Perhaps Eastwood's Best Performance In A Non-Western...Simply A Great Film.
Truth often being stranger, and often more interesting, than fiction Eastwood's Escape From Alcatraz plays it mostly straight, and why not since the actual escape had all it needed for a fantastic story. It only adds to the legend that the open ending is just that. Escape From Alcatraz is probably the second best prison move, escape or otherwise, after The Shawshank Redemption. It could have actually been quite plodding and nowhere nearly as great without Eastwood's "good guy" toughie. He makes you root for the cons to escape without breaking a sweat. Though approached lightly, Patric McGoohan's constant tense portrayal of the heartless warden adds more inhumanity than is actually seen on screen becoming the bad guy outstripping the actual prison bully Wolf who is a murderer itching to add Frank Morris to his body count. I certainly have enjoyed McGoohan's penchant for creating an enigmatic and cagey charactrer from his The Prisoner British TV series, but in far less screen time he manages to give a equally brilliant edge to Alcatraz. Finally, credit must be given to director Don Siegel who Eastwood has publically said he learned everything about directing movies from. Siegel, and writer Robert Finch. wisely steered away from adding bombast allowing the real element of the utterly hopeless incareration on Alcatraz to underpin the excellent performance of the principals. This movie was stripped down to the essentials, masterfully telling a powerful story which lives on yet today as legend. Escape From Alcatraz holds up to repeated viewings as an excellent movie actually propelling the legend. Being available for Amazon Prime made it an easy recommendation which was much appreciated by this viewer. It's at my list's top of a non-western Eastwood flick without doubt.
