It has just enough heft to even out metal--but the rawhide won't leave any tool marks. I like the feel of this mallet--it feels good and strong and should last me many years. Note: I would recommend that you condition the mallet before use. I soaked the head of mine in hot water for 30 minutes until the rawhide is soft, then hammered away on a clean, smooth rock--it will start out very soft and then get firmer as it dries. The working surface achieved with conditioning breaks in the mallet quickly and will get you better results in your work.

Ok, first I am going to talk about the other reviews giving less that 5 stars due to the size being smaller than they thought. In the item description it gives the measurement across the head, and the depth of the head. They are not selling this as a 5lb sledge, they are selling it as what it is described as, and if you can't order what you are looking for, that's your bad, not the sellers, or fault of the product. Now that I got that out of my system. What a well built rawhide mallet. Yes, it is small, but if you don't want to damage something very fine, its perfect. I plan on buying larger sizes later. I have used it to drive wiper seals in hydraulic cylinders, and wheel seals on trailer hubs. I have also used it to remove stubborn pistons and glands on hydraulic cylinders without fear of damaging the ram-rod, and that is where a heavier one will come in handy.
