This book is NOT a source of information for intelligent laymen; the 5-star reviews should suggest this, because they are all comments by academics or graduate students. Indeed, the book seems to be a compilation of lecture materials for graduate students or academics. To make explicit why the book is useless, and likely incomprehensible, to the intelligent layman: (1) most of the discussion involves comparisons among mathematical economic models (2) the majority of page space is taken up by either mathematical formulae or by discussions of the terms and meaning of the formulae, in terms understandable only by the expert (3) while the editorial reviews talk about how the book includes empirical data, these data comprise less than 5%--indeed, possibly less than 2%-- of the text and (4) the book is devoid of lay-accessible discussions of policy issues and prescriptions of interest to a lay reader. Whatever delight academics may take from the book, it illustrates exactly what is wrong with the field of economics today: it is a pseudoscience attempting to use arcane mathematics to explain human behavior (in the aggregate), rather than a science with axioms consistently provable or applicable under varying circumstances. Indeed, the takeaway from reading this book is that the leading models are consistent with particular empirical conditions, and not with others. Thus, the models are not sufficiently predictive to make them usable in real-world applications. So, while the world burns (metaphorically) the academics fiddle with the knobs and dials on the models, hoping at last to tune in to a frequency that produces music. If this book is cutting-edge, state of the art, and so on, then it is very apparent that they haven't yet tuned to the right frequency.

Up to date and very clear presentation of the mainstream theory of international trade.Its main strength is in the union of theoretical and empirical issues, all treated really carefully.

It is on time and the book is in good condition.

relevant to teaching graduate courses international economics

I really expected far more from this textbook. It adds very little to already existing graduate textbooks on trade. It is not useful for graduate students that want to understand the literature of the 2000s. It assumes you already know the material. It debotes a lot of space to the old literature at the expense of the new one. This is a field that has changed significantly. Frankly, I find hard to see its value added.
