## Description

Product Description ASUS Chromebit - simpler and smarter, Chrome OS on a stick desertcart.com

Review: Now that's what I was looking for in a small gadget. - I love Android, and I love ChromeOS. I have an Acer chromebook, an desertcart Fire, an Apple iPad, and a Samsung Galaxy, and so far, and oddly enough, this chromebit is my favourite piece of technology. First things first. This is NOT a fast machine. It is slower than the chromebook I bought three years ago, yet not that slow: I've watched Rio 2016 on streaming and there is just the barest hint of lag, and I think it is my ISP's fault rather than the chromebit. It's completely portable. Just this morning I did a presentation by plugging it into an HD monitor instead of looking for an overhead projector. It does everything a chromebook or a chromebox can, except that this thing, sadly, does not have USB 3.0 capabilities. I also miss having a microphone, but at least it paired nice and easy with my bluetooth hearphones and keyboard. Wifi reception may be a little bit compromised behind the monitor or TV, but at least you can use an expander cable (I got one that was a meter long and got a coupler, and it works like a charm). Using google drive eases the lack of internal capacity: it has barely 16 GB on board, but I've tested it with USB drives up to 128 GB and external SSD drives up to 256 GB; however, cheap drives tend to use more oower and some of them can be read but not write. Mechanical drives, using too much power, are simply not up to the task. Or to the power supply available, to tell you the truth; you need a wall outlet to power up the chromebit, because there isn't enough juice available from the USB ports of any standard TV. So if you want to connect several drives or accessories, you need a hub that supports an external power supply. My only complaints are that the only USB port available is 2.0 instead of 3.0, and that it lacks a microsd expansion slot. Except for that, it's a perfect little machine for under a hundred bucks.
Review: I really recommend this device if you need it for the same reasons i bought it..updates below... - This little device does everything i was hoping it would do. I wanted this device for mainly streaming movies and tv shows, but i wanted a browser so i could browse other sites to watch shows or movies on which things like the fire tv or other streaming devices do not do as far as i am aware. So after watching a movie in hd through desertcart i found it played with less glitches then my computer. I always thought my computer glitched playing hd movies or any videos because of my internet connection but i guess that is not the case because this little device seems to handle the hd videos a hundred times better, which i love because i wasn't expecting it too so that is a win for me. So i mainly bought this for watching movies and tv shows from desertcart, netflix and all other sites on the web and it works great, better then i thought it would. The other reason i bought it was because my desktop computer i have hooked up to my tv uses at least 200 watts or more of electricity an hour so i bought this device knowing it uses i think about 18 watts of electricity an hour which means i could leave this running 24/7 if i really wanted to and it would use about the same power in 24 hours has my desktop use in may 2 hours of use. So if this device keeps working great for movies and tv shows i will save another 5 to 10 dollars a month on my electricity bill which will be awesome. If you are looking for a setup like the windows 10 this device is not for you but if you are looking for a great way to watch your shows or movies this will work great specially if you watch them from other sites on the web and the plus thing is google chrome comes with adblocker which makes watching shows or movies online a lot easier.. As of now i recommend this device for 85 dollars it does everything i want it to do. And for other things i need like printing papers or other things this device does not do i will still have my desktop computer for that type of stuff but for the most part that computer will be shut down 99.9 percent of the time now unless the device quits working but i hope it doesn't. Buy this if you just need a way to save electricity and a way to watch all your shows online with out all the extra stuff you don't need just to do that.. Update July 4th 2016.... So it has been 6 months since i bought this device and i am happy with it and have zero problems with it. I use it to watch tv shows/movies online and also watch shows from desertcart to. Anyways i have this device on 8 to 12 hours a day mainly watching tv shows and this device handles it perfect. I could not be happier because i think i have gotten my money worth out of it. So for a little over 80 bucks with heavy use of streaming movies and tv shows and it still works great is a great deal and i will be back in another 6 months to update again. So if this device last me a full year of heavy usage i would for sure buy this product every year or two if i had to because it does a lot for such a cheap affordable price. Update June 27th 2018.... I know my last update i said i would be back in 6 months. Well i guess i wasn't back but beside that i have now had this asus computer stick for 2 years and 6 months and it is still going strong. This device has been very reliable. The past year i have not used it as much per day because i have upgraded to apple tv for my streaming uses but this device still works great and i still use it here and there for watching shows i can not find else where. So with that said this device is well worth it and from what i see the price has not gone up so that is a bonus...

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do you connect a mouse or keyboard to it? And what mouse and what keyboard should I buy for it?**
A: While I have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard w/touchpad, I used a Logitech wireless keyboard & mouse combination (the Chromebit was plugged into an HDMI port on the side of a wall mounted TV near the desk w/the keyboard & mouse.) The plan was to get Chrome Remote Desktop working but I gave up on that due to another reason.

The CS10 has 3 connections —1) the supplied AC adapter, 2) an HDMI plug to connect to a TV/monitor & 3) a USB port.

As I do not currently need the USB port except for a place to plug-in the keyboard/mouse dongle, prefer the tactile feedback from the wireless keyboard & prefer a mouse to a trackpad it seemed the way to go.

**Q: How can I use Google Hangouts with the chromebit?**
A: You just have to install and configure hangouts, if it didn't already come installed. Look for the little magnifying glass in the lower left corner, click on it and type 'hangouts'. Once configured, as long as the chromebit is turned on and the display its configured with is also on, you can make and receive calls and texts through hangouts. I've used plain old (like 4-5 year old) logitech webcams with it, which work perfectly for video and as a microphone. The chromebit doesn't have a microphone. There is a 3.5MM audio jack to plug a regular microphone into. If you use a USB microphone or webcam, you'll have to use a bluetooth keyboard/mouse with it or use a usb hub to hook everything up as the chromebit has only one USB port.

**Q: Can you cast from another device like with chromecast??**
A: "You can't cast content from your phone to it" -- http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/11/mini-review-asus-chromebit-is-somewhere-between-a-chromecast-and-a-mini-pc/As I understand it, the purpose of the ASUS Chromebit is to exist as a standalone Chrome OS computer, but one that is directly attached to your display (Computer Monitor, TV, etc.) through HDMI. To connect a keyboard and/or mouse, you need either a bluetooth connection (the Chromebit does provide bluteooth) or a wireless system (like the Logitech MK360 Mouse and Keyboard Combo) attached through the USB port on the Chromebit -- which I have tested (the logitech combo) successfully. You may also extend the USB device support by attaching a USB hub through the single USB port on the chromebit device. As is, the ASUS Chromebit comes with a power cable, a two-prong USA wall wart adapter, a removable cover for the HDMI plug, a short HDMI extension cable (roughly 6 inches), and a set of 3 pairs of adhesive velcro circles. The idea seems to be to attach your chromebit to your HDTV through an HDMI connection (with or without the extender) and then to secure the Chromebit with a pair of the adhesive velcro circles.Yes, you can move the chromebit to any HDMI input device, but it usually requires also a Wireless (LAN) connection (with a route(r) to a WAN/Internet connection for general browsing) to take advantage of all of its features. This is essentially a chromebook in a 6 inch stick. If that's what you're looking for, then it fits the bill, otherwise if you just want to do chromecast broadcasting with an advanced device, you'll need to look into the more modern chromecast-specific devices (they seem to have split the models between Audio+Video and just Audio, so be aware of that distinction).

**Q: Has anyone had problm with the Chromebit not waking from sleep? Sometimes I have to unplug power, then plug back in.**
A: I have the same problem. I've read all the suggestions on the forums, blogs and reviews, and tried them. Just switching to the hdmi port my chromebit is on does not wake it up. Nor does hitting any key on the keyboard or the mouse, including ctrl-alt-del. When this happens, the only option left is unplug/replug which always works. A real pain, though. Then maybe 20-30% of the time hitting a key WILL bring it out of hibernation, and I think I'm onto something. But the next time I'm not, and it's back to nothing working and unplug/replug. I've decided that the chromebit is a nice idea, but faulty execution. I'm looking to upgrade to a 4gb chromebox, which would solve my periodic crash problems too. It happens at least once a week with the chromebit, presumably when I've topped out the RAM. And I only have 2 tabs open: gmail and a gdoc. Too many bumps in the chromebit road for me to be happy with it.
