Best. Sleep. Ever.
I have always been a light sleeper, and am easily woken up by relatively quiet sounds like the air conditioner turning on/off or floor boards creaking etc - to say nothing about outside noise from passing cars or neighbors mowing their lawn at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning... I tried drowning out the background noises with a "Nature Sounds" CD, but couldn't find any that I liked. So eventually I started sleeping with the ceiling fan on high - which definitely muted the background noise, but also makes the bedroom feel colder and really dried my eyes and skin out. Then I started babysitting for a family with a new infant, and they introduced me to the Marpac SleepMate in their nursery. If you haven't heard a white noise machine before, I'm not quite sure how to describe the sound... Maybe imagine a quiet vacuum cleaner? Or maybe a cross between a "hiss" and "whoosh"? Anyway, it has a very soothing womb-like sound that helps their son fall asleep and prevents him from hearing his parents move around the house after he's in bed. Needless to say, I fell in love! I went home and immediately bought a SleepMate for myself. The unit is small and neutral color, and definitely doesn't look out of place in an "adult" bedroom. You can adjust the tone/texture of the sound by twisting various parts of the unit, and I was easily able to find a setting that my boyfriend and I both liked. The SleepMate was worth every penny because it has drastically improved my overall quality of life. I actually feel rested when I wake up every morning, because I am usually able to sleep through the entire night uninterrupted. I don't notice background house noises any more or get woken up my roommate's TV - and it even covers up pet noise! (My cat had developed a nasty habit of lurking right outside my bedroom door and meowing insistently at around 4:30 a.m. - but he's given up, having realized that his yowling no longer produces the desired effect because I can now sleep soundly through all of his complaining.) I have to admit, I've become so addicted to the white noise that I even bring my SleepMate with me when I travel. In fact, I've raved so much about this product that my parents and sister all bought SleepMates, and my boyfriend got me a 2nd unit for our guest bedroom this Christmas. One quick tip - I've noticed that on certain hard surfaces, the SleepMate produces a secondary low-pitched reverberation - but this disappears if you simply place a soft cushion underneath the unit. ** NOTE - I bought my 1st MarPac SleepMate in November 2008, and it's still going strong. I recently moved from a relatively quiet subdivision to an apartment in the city that has a LOT more traffic noise - I had to turn my SleepMate to the louder (II) setting, but it still manages to drown out mostly everything. Every now and then a particularly high-pitched ambulance siren or a really loud, thumping bass gets through, but overall the SleepMate is still letting me sleep soundly!

Easy to relax and fall asleep
Solid white noise machine. No apps, no nonsense. just turn it on and it works. The sound is real and consistent, not that fake looped noise. Helps me sleep and blocks out random house and street noise. Been reliable and worth the money.

So good we bought it twice (7 years apart)!
What a great white noise maker this is! This came into my life when my son was born in 2018. The need for background noise in a big, creaky, 120-year-old house is no joke. Especially when you add a brand new person who barely knows how to do anything but breathe and sleep. This Dohm Classic is about the size of a spindle of CDs (that's 1 iPhone wide, and 2/3 of an iPhone tall for all you whippersnappers). Not tiny, but the fact that the noise you're hearing is actually being made by a spinning fan (not a speaker) means it needs to have some real estate inside for parts. There are no timers or automatic functions, just ON/OFF, and the ability to change the noise characteristics by rotating the body in two places to change how the rushing air vibrations leave the device. It's loud enough that it can sit on a centrally-located table in our upstairs hallway and be heard solidly in both bedrooms, each approximately 10 feet away. My review title states that we've purchased two of these in seven years. I'm an engineer, so it's not unheard of for me to take things apart when they stop functioning. After about four years of nightly use (11+ hours per night) the first unit started making some extra grinding, groaning noises that my engineer brain instantly pegged as an unhappy motor. I removed the four screws on the bottom and did my best to clean the interior and add a couple drops of small motor oil to the parts that move. Put back together, the thing operated fine. Over the next two years, I'd regularly open it up and repeat the process every few months. You can hear the noise characteristics change over time, so (assuming you're comfortable doing so) you'll know when it's time for a cleaning. At the end of year six, it was not happy at all. Screaming and screeching, and refusing to spin. Nothing a complete disassembly and cleaning of the entire motor couldn't fix! Squeaked another three months out of it before retiring it to our vacation home and purchasing a brand new one for home. I was HAPPY to spend another $40 for something that performed so well for so many years! Pro Tip: Plug this into a smart outlet so you can automate a schedule and even add timer functionality if you want!

This is the best white-noise machine out there. It's the third one we buy; we now all have one in our bedrooms. It's a steady noise; perfect for sleeping, concentrating, cutting out annoying noise coming from outside. Not quite as loud as an air purifier, but louder than a regular fan. Over the years, our kids have inherited our DOHM and the oldest model we have is probably 10 years old now. It still makes a perfectly steady noise; no rattles. We are 3 pp with ADHD in the family and this white-noise maker helps tremendously!!

My wife developed a bout of insomnia some 5 years ago, and found that at the time the "Birdsong" channel on Digital Radio became a bizzare and unexpected solution to her problem. However when it went off air some 2-3 years ago we went down a huge and complex route of trying to create digital loops off downloads of birdsong, rainforests, white noise et al (and failing due to the inevitable "jump" betweeen loops and the complications for setting up about 8 hours of loops). Eventually we settled on her running a succession of huge 12" fans next to the bed and that's how it's been for some 3 years. Somewhere along the line we came across this device but ignored it due to the price. Finally, as a birthday gift, I got her this and the moment we turned it on we new we had cracked it and the fans could go. Cheap as 12" fans can be, shoving one in an Ikea bag everytime she/we to stay away has been a pain. Features are; 1) The device is 9 x 13cm and so is very unintrusive 2) appears to be basically a compact fan in a box and therefore gives a uniform (very important) white noise output. 3) Has two adjustments; top dial that seems to modify pitch, side collar that adjust volume. 4)The operating switch is three way; Off, I and II. Whatever the differnce between I and II is must be subtle as I can't tell the difference. RE: VOLTAGE; PLEASE NOTE; VERY IMPORTANT; I "took a punt" on this, not reading many of the reviews. Having now taken delvery and read some, I was concerned that many stated that there were potentially dangerous issues with the device being a USA device at 117 Volts and associated issues. Please can you note that ours came with a UK plug attached and a small red lettered sticker attached to the instruction manual stating "240 Volt AC Operation Only" so I can only assume the manufacturer has taken onboard these criticisms and is selling a "fully UK'd" version. Perhaps refering to this when ordering could ensure trouble-free operation. Clearly as a solution to insomnia, this is going to do the job for her. At £50 it's not cheap but £50 for my wife's continued mental health seems utterly cheap. My advice is give it a go.

I have tried apps on my cell phone and tablet and they were OK. I bought a white noise machine with different sound options, the sounds were so terrible I returned it. I bought this machine. It has a real fan inside and you can adjust the tone 2 ways. There is only an on low, on high or off option. I was skeptical. How I love this machine! The sound is so perfect and soothing not annoying. I use low during the day when I work and high at night for sleeping. I will buy this machine again and again.
