Lots of helpful exercises re different tenses for intermediate and advanced students of English
I received a free advance e-copy of this book in order to offer suggestions before it was published and then to write a review. I'm just as impressed with this book as with Phil's Advanced Writing Skills book. It's well set out with a logical and helpful progression through different tenses in English. I really like the way that he splits up the exercises into different sections, for example: Past Simple - positive/negative statements, questions, and negative questions, before mixing up the previous components to make sure that the student first becomes comfortable with each type of statement/question before the harder challenge of needing to choose between positive/negative/questions within that tense. Later on he provides exercises that ask the student to choose between, for example, mixed perfect tenses, which is also helpful. So there is a helpful progression from easier sentences using only one tense before moving on to comparing different tenses. I'm new to the world of teaching English as a Foreign Language but I have struggled to find books with enough exercises to help a student become comfortable and competent in not only using a tense, but more importantly, choosing which one to use - and without mixing up the tenses, especially re past tenses. So, to find a book that provides as many exercises, and answers, as this, would be very helpful for intermediate/advanced students. The students I come into contact with are mostly beginner/elementary/lower intermediate and for those that know, for example, what the present perfect tense is, they often mix it up with the past simple etc, or just use the present simple etc and say 'yesterday' etc to show that they want to talk about the past. They might know the basics of some of the tenses but moving from theory into practice is too difficult, so they can get stuck knowing some theory but not be able to use it correctly or quickly enough, especially in conversation. All I want now is for Phil to write a book for complete beginners as I struggle to find material for 'real' beginners. Some of the 'beginner' material I have seen is too advanced for quite a lot of the people I come across. (Some of my students haven't received a good education, or indeed maybe any education, in their mother tongue, which is why some 'beginner' material can be too difficult for them.) So a book with very simple vocabulary repeating the same very commonly used verbs/nouns etc, for maybe several sections, but with a similar format would be great!

Seller gave conditions for return.
The book arrived fast and in good condition. I realized that it doesn't cover certain grammar issues I thought it would so I requested a return. The seller gave a few conditions for the return which seemed a little above and beyond.

British
I wasnโt aware when I bought this book that it used British English. I am using it to work with students in America, so Iโve had to revise some of the examples.
