Are the coloured pieces wooden?

Yes they are wooden, so you might get some imperfections in the pieces where the wood chipped when they were being made.

how many players is this suitable for

You can play this game on your own against a timer. You can have two players race against each other. You can also have lots of players race against a timer by taking turns. The aim of the game is, one to place all your pieces, and two to get the fastest time. It does make you think but I hope this helps.

Does this game come with just a single board and pieces? or does it come with 2 sets like Genius square so you can play against each other?

This game comes with two sets of boards and pieces, just like The Genius Square. Players can play solo or against each other.

Is this challenging and fun enough for smart adults? Most reviews mention kids and Genius Square sounds too easy. There is a 6 year old in the family

I think you would find Genius star more challenging. Genius square is good fun and can be challenging at times . We have both games and play regularly .
