Is it possible to remove the screen protector? I may want to add my own tempered glass protector instead. I've done this with supcase phone cases...

Yeah you can remove it, not that hard to do, I did the same and used a tempered glass from super shields and have no issues

What material is the screen protector, feels more like polyurethane than pet (i like it) ?

I read somewhere that is is made of polycarbonate. It protects well, but picks up fingerprints like crazy. I keep a microfiber cloth nearby.
