Products, technologies, and workplaces change so quickly today that everyone is continually learning. Many of us are also teaching, even when it's not in our job descriptions. Whether it's giving a presentation, writing documentation, or creating a website or blog, we need and want to share our knowledge with other people. But if you've ever fallen asleep over a boring textbook, or fast-forwarded through a tedious e-learning exercise, you know that creating a great learning experience is harder than it seems. In Design For How People Learn, Second Edition , you'll discover how to use the key principles behind learning, memory, and attention to create materials that enable your audience to both gain and retain the knowledge and skills you're sharing. Updated to cover new insights and research into how we learn and remember, this new edition includes new techniques for using social media for learning as well as two brand new chapters on designing for habit and best practices for evaluating learning, such as how and when to use tests. Using accessible visual metaphors and concrete methods and examples, Design For How People Learn, Second Edition will teach you how to leverage the fundamental concepts of instructional design both to improve your own learning and to engage your audience. Review: Practical Insights That Changed How I Design Learning Experiences - Design for How People Learn has been an extremely helpful resource for understanding how people actually learn — not just in theory, but in practice. I frequently teach adults and regularly need to present new content in each session. This book helped reshape the way I think about designing learning experiences, not just delivering information. It challenged me to consider attention, memory, motivation, and engagement as part of the learning process, rather than assuming that good content alone is enough. What I appreciated most is how practical the ideas are. The concepts are clear, accessible, and immediately applicable. After reading this book, I found myself intentionally adjusting how I structure sessions, pace content, and reinforce key ideas — and the result has been more engaging sessions and learning that actually sticks. If you teach, train, facilitate workshops, or design educational content in any setting, this book is well worth your time. It’s a strong blend of research-based insight and real-world application. Review: Entertaining & Informative - This book is filled with great content that obviously comes from years of professional practice. Dirksen covers a lot of practical information in a fun way that doesn't feel too overwhelming (for novices) or too simplified (for more advanced practitioners).

A must for technical trainers
Julie makes it very clear in her book that we must focus on the learner so they can improve their performance.

Great book. Good ideas to think of. Could benefit from strategies
Great book! I'm very critical of instructional design. This book really wants to help you make your courses better. Author shows you what to think of when planning and creating your coruse so that your students actually learn. The only con is that the material is more conceptual which is still helpful, but could've been extended with real strategies. For example the author will say that your students have a gap and you need to fill that gap and think of how your content will fill the gap before creating your content, but what the author doesn't give is strategies on how to develop to fill the gap. How do you fill the gap? How do you really know what the gap is? Overall, this will get you thinking and coming up with a course that will be better than what you would've created and most likely better than the crappy courses out there!

A fantastic book for new and experienced learning professionals!
I think this might be the best book I've ever read that is related to the learning and development industry. Julie deconstructs complex concepts and ideas in relatable and easily understandable ways. I recommend this work for all my clients developing their L&D or Training Depts. It's easy to read and reference and has a wealth of information derived from more recent research. I find the lack of "clinical" or "academic" language refreshing and even enjoyable.

valuable training development insights
I’ve been designing training for decades and thought I knew it all but this book caught my attention so I gave it a chance and I’m so glad that I did. Whether you are a beginner, an expert, or someone in between you will find lots of tips, reminders, and insights. Highly recommended!

Really good book!
Even though I have a degree in psychology I learned something on just about every page. The way it is written makes it interesting, lots of graphics and examples. Some books on this topic are too academic and boring, but not this one. It is written in a way that the author is putting into practice what she teaches. It is engaging. I read it all the way through. I plan on using the knowledge gained this book in my own courses to help learners be fully engaged in the content. Def worth the read.

Ideal for designers working in change management
Excellent book. Easy to read and relatable with fun examples and a clear narrative. My current L&D Bible, though I am now reading 'Talk to the Elephant' so that may change;)
