Snooze Fest and annoying AF book/characters/plot/everything.

*by S***S on Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018*

The story is of two brothers--Devon and Noah--who grew up with a sadistic, sadist, serial killer of a dad...and how they grew up to be just like him. The brothers make a career out of it, hired out as contract killers from clients with specific instructions on torture and/or death. But then enters Nina, who is the latest client and Devon's soon-to-be obsession.Okay, so yeah...I love dark, twisty, taboo, way out there 'romances' and I've read a lot. The premise is good, it really is, and starts off promising...for a couple of chapters until Nina shows up. Sadly, the poor execution of everything else makes this book tedious, maddening, silly, and boring. I love cats--I have 2!--but OMFG, this author could NOT stop going on and on and about Nina's many cats in this book. WTF? I wanted to scream: it's just a dang cat; get over it. And remember, I have 2 cats that I adore!!! But I was seriously getting annoyed.Besides the authors' cat fetish, the whole plot was just way off and all over the place, not to mention Devon and Nina. It's a fairly predictable story line but with a darker, sinister spin, and meant to shock you but I've read better books in this vein and do it so deliciously well...go read CJ Roberts and you'll see what I mean. Now, this type of book is not based/rooted in reality at all, which is never a good thing and boy did the authors throw reality out the door but most of the time, if the characterizations or the plot is spot on and tightly woven, much can be forgiven. However, the 'skills' of these two authors don't mix and a lot of miscues were evident throughout the story. Devon's obsession with Nina was inevitable, as he is a serial killer, but he came off so pathetic and lame as he became more 'in love' with Nina. And did the authors at all research how police actually work? Nope. These authors make police officers come off as completely inept and stupid. Not to mention the unbelievable reaction and behaviors, especially Nina's mental state after a major trauma done to her by the brothers. So much of the book was about Nina, her cat, getting drunk with a friend, her cat, her new cat, how 'nice' Devon is, and then Devon going on about how hot Nina was, etc--gag me--and then the sedate ending is rushed and I just couldn't care. And Nina, GAH! Don't even get me started with her. TSTL for starters, and never reacted in a realistic way to anything, even when the brothers put her through hell. Honestly, I'd wished Noah had swooped in to just end it all...for all of us but alas, that did not happen.I guess I didn't find this 'dark/sinister/sexy/whatever-everyone-else-says-it-is-in-glowy-5-star-reviews' (seriously, how are there so many positive reviews?!), mostly because I was so overly distracted by the typos, weird phrasing, poor editing, and cliched writing. There was a lack of research, intelligence, or thought to this entire story. Again, the IDEA was there but never fully matured or developed and went a teenaged wet dream route that wasn't worth my time to have read. This is my first read by these author, and my last, at least for a long while though I have 'heard' that Ker Dukey is talented, and her other stories are 'amazing'. But this was a poor example from Dukey but I suppose I can blame it partly on the other author...who I likely won't read. Glad this was free, but precious time wasted...

Dark and demented... just how I like my reads...

*by A***B on Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2016*

Readers kept telling me that I needed to read this book. They told me is definitely my kind of book. Then my book club voted it for our April read. I am SO glad they did. I have a tendency to one-click books and not getting a chance to read them all. This is one I was more than happy to read! That intro? Sucked me right in! I was hooked. The book had already become like a drug for me. I did nothing but think about this book every time I had to put it down when life interrupted my reading time.Let me tell you, this book isn't for those who like light reads. NOT AT ALL. It's all the things I love. Messed up. Dark. Gritty. Raw. And the plot twists? Although I saw one coming, that ending... I had a feeling something like it was coming. There are some signs, but it took me a while to catch on.This is one of those stories I can't really talk much about them. This entire book needs to be a mystery to you until you read it. Anything I say can be considered as a spoiler. I love that about this book!

    Twisted But I Loved It

*by J***N on Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2015*

This is one messed up story but I loved it. Devon and Noah are brought up by a father who likes to kill young girls and teaches them his trade. They grow up to be the same as their father. Devon likes to take pictures of the victim and their death and Noah is the one who actually kills. One of their victims, Nina, brings out a soft and protective side of Devon however it doesn't stop Noah from a violently raping and attacking her. Nina survives but moves out of town and hides away. This is one twisted plot with many twists and turns. Devon can't get Nina out of his mind and decides to befriend and seduce her. Devon seems like a redeemed man really in love with Nina but he has many secrets. Devon and Nina's friendship then romantic relationship is sweet but filled with passion. I was routing for them to get together but it was almost like watching a train wreck knowing around the corner the lies would come forward. This is an extremely dark read but I loved the relationship between Devon and Nina. It must be such a difficult feat to write a story like this and believe in the romance, but I believed it and routed for them. Can't we just forget that little detail that Devon was part of the team that set up her rape? Sick right? However the author did a great job at showing the softer more loving side of Devon and made me love him too.
