Question 4

why is the under side wet or slimy? Is the countertop wet to start with or some how the water seep through the mat surface?

Accepted Answer

For that price ($15 on 03/15/2016 for just a mat, who's kidding who? Does it come with free Netflix?) you might as well get a cheaper $11.47 real drying rack with a base you can occasionally drain into the sink. Excess water drains into the sink but sometimes you get some water left that does not go on your counter but in the board/base (you disengage the board from the dish rack and use a sponge when you clean up your kitchen).http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-06368004-White-Small-Ultra/dp/B002QE1D6I/ref=sr_1_77?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1458029766&sr=1-77&keywords=dish+drying+rackIf you have to worry about sliminess/moisture and drying your counter top after you air-dry your dishes then that is not a good drying rack/mat.If you have to hang your drying mat to air dry it after you air dry your dishes, that is not a good mat.It would be like somebody telling me I need to clean up the inside of my cloches washing machine after I use it...not a fat chance and it's shiny and clean by itself.Discarding the drier filter's lint is how far I can go (to improve efficiency and avoid clogging and fire).I'm allergic to dust but not to drier filters as that dust/lint clings together and don't get in the air and in my nose.Note:Water cannot seep through a silicone mat.Silicone is both a water and air sealant. It will keep water out but if you have a water leak, it will also keep that water in.Silicone is a food-safe product and is gaining popularity from colorful strainers, soup and pasta ladles, food steamers, ice cube trays, loaf/bread pans, muffin molds... It can withstand 500°F.Silicone is used for electrical insulation and numerous applications for cars and airplanes. It's impervious to microbiological growth. On a household level, it's used to make silicone rubber (like your mat) and silicone caulk (that you might need to re-seal your sink). If you get water under a silicone drying mat positioned next to your sink, you might have a water leakage coming from the sink (the piece between the sink and the counter) and might need to reseal that, the same when you get a water leak because sealants don't last forever, especially when exposed to chemicals in cleaning products. Here's a YouTube video about how to caulk and seal your kitchen sink.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_l4WgJnxGQ
