I cant seem to get the led to come on. i am using tg-4 model. have dug through the manuals and menus and can't figure it out.

On TG-3 you select Macro mode on dial, then in flash menu scroll through options until you find torch selection. LED should light up when you half press shutter or take photo. Hope this helps?

How does it compare to FD-1?

I have the FD-1 and there are some important differences. The most important one is the FD-1 uses the FLASH to produce the light, this LG-1 uses the LED light of the camera. The second is the purpurse. The FD-1 is for making a normal photo look more evenly light, especially under water or in portraits. The LG-1 is for macro photography, when you need a even light source at really short distances of a few inches. If you use the FD-1 for macro youre get white photos... I already try. If you use the LG-1 for normal pictures, the photo will be under light unless is really close to the camera.
