Dear rmbuyer, This answer is from RhinoSystems, the manufacturer of Naväge Nasal Care. Great question! Naväge SaltPod capsules have a laboratory-validated shelf life of greater than four years. They are labeled with an expiration date that is four years from their date of manufacture. However, there are two, precisely measured ingredients in a Naväge SaltPod capsule: pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride (sea salt) and ultra-purified water. These ingredients are extremely stable and known not to degrade. As a result, it is likely that SaltPods have an even longer shelf life than has been laboratory-validated. Best regards, Dave

Q: How long does one salt pod last - how many uses?

One salt pod per use. It's punctured and drops the solution into the water in the top reservoir. Without it, the entire system will not work and I do not recommend going the cheap route. Mixing your own solution and just leaving the same salt pod in because it will clog up. The pods have the exact solution.

Dear Amazon Customer, This response is from RhinoSystems, the developer and manufacturer of Naväge Nasal Care. YES - you can do exactly what you're suggesting. Just remove the first SaltPod after crushing and insert a second that you will leave in the crushing chamber after closing the lid. Bear in mind that there are about 0.25 ounces of saline concentrate in a SaltPod, so you will have to fill the upper tank just slightly less. Also, for some users, higher concentrations of saline will irritate (sting or burn) the interior lining of the nasal cavity. The epithelial cells have nerve endings in them that react negatively to either too much or too little salt. The mucosa (lining) naturally secretes mucus that is isotonic, which is why we formulate SaltPods to create isotonic saline when mixed with the water in the upper tank: it is completely NON-reactive with the mucosal lining and will not sting or burn.
