I'm freaked out over how far they seemingly stick out. Is there any danger of having something bump into them and have the plug jam in your ear?

I've actually had this happen. I was at a metal show and someone from a mosh pit fell into me and it somehow got jammed into my ear where I couldn't get it out with my fingertips and I had to wait to get home for my wife to extract it with needle nose pliers. It didnt go deep enough to cause damage but it sure was uncomfortable. I've used them 20+ times since and it hasnt happened again..
