Is this calculator able to solve LINREG, QUADREG, and CUBICREG regressions?

Yes, this calculator does statistical regression. Push APPS, choose data/matrix, 3. New, pick any variable, enter on the table for your x and y data under c1 and c2 if you are doing quadratic regression per se. When you are ready for regression, push F5: Calc, and pick your regression type, set x... to c1, and y... to c2 per your table's field names, change Store RegEQ to ... y1(x) or y2(x) or whatever you would like to use from the drop down menu. When you are ready to process your data into a regression, press ENTER. The next window will show your coefficient values.

I need a ti84 for my statistics class. Would this one work or just confuse me more.. ?

You could ask the instructor if the TI 89 would work ok for your class. Some classes are highly focused on instructions for a particular calculator and others are not. The instructor could tell you so.

The TI 89 will work fine for statistics. If the TI 84 is recommended for your course, that may be a better purchase cost wise and if the extra functions may make it more confusing to use.

On the other hand, if you value having more features and can zero in on the ones you need, this may be a better buy than having to buy yet another calculator for a class recommending a higher level calculator.

What does it mean that it's programmable and what are the benefits of that over the standard ti89? My son needs this for college.

it means that you can actually program a function or a formula on to the calculator, my personally would not recommend the ti89 titanium calculator until you son is taking calc III, due to the fact that is no useful in calc I and II, because that's only dealing with 2 variable functions, I have it and didn't get fully usage until I taking calc III and general physics. TI84 is the way to go with....
