WITH ENGINE ON IT SHOWS BOTH BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR CONDITION. **Q: Does it come with batteries included?** A: It powers up off the battery being tested. But just connect to battery, read the voltage, go to the charts which tell % charge as a function of voltage-then you know status of the battery. Is the unit defective?** A: I'm not a mechanic, but all I do is first I check the voltage of the battery without having started the vehicle. Next I start the engine and check the battery voltage while the engine is idling.
