By squeezing the handles together, the punch will move down into the channel, cutting out a slug of metal. A scribe line can be followed by looking down on work in this position. A slot is cut by making successive cuts. To make a sharp 90 degrees turn, pull the tool out of the slot. Turn the work 90 degrees and insert the tool again. It is great for small adjustments of your work, and is very easy to use. recommended only for small jobs. **Q: Are there more narrow versions available? I need to cut 1/16" and 1/8" wide slots.** A: DO NOT GRIND AWAY PART OF THE MOVING CUTTER. This will not work. The non-moving part of the tool is also part of the cutter. If the moving part of the cutter is reduced in size, the material will not be cut and will just bend over without fully cutting it off. You then need to use a Dremel tool to rescue your material from the nibbler... **Q: how wide does the jaw open? I want to cut a plastic fan case to install a toggle switch. I dont want the mess of a dremel, file, or grinder.** A: This thing works like a champ for cutting thin sheet metal. I've tried several nibblers and this is my favorite. That said, I don't know how well it would work for what you want to do. Dunno about plastic.
